Insuring a light quadricycle (brommobiel) through Klaverblad

The largest losses on a light quadricycle (brommobiel) are theft and injury to the driver. In both cases, standard cover does not deal with them automatically.

In brief

Finass arranges cover through Klaverblad among others, a company with a broad private range; see also moped insurance from Klaverblad. We are not tied to this company and we set several insurers side by side. The general explanation of this vehicle is on the page about insuring a light quadricycle.

With theft the sticking point is not the cover but the security clause. A light quadricycle often stands in the street or on a drive and can be taken away with limited means. Insurers therefore attach conditions to theft cover: an approved lock or alarm, sometimes a track-and-trace system, and its use every time you leave the vehicle. That clause is a condition of cover, not a piece of advice; anyone who once failed to use the lock is left empty-handed after a theft.

The second point is injury to yourself. Compulsory third-party liability cover exists for the losses of others and own-damage cover exists for the vehicle. If you as the driver are injured in an accident for which no one else is liable, neither pays out. For that situation there are additional sections such as personal accident cover for occupants or accident cover for occupants. On a vehicle with no crumple zone and none of the safety features of a passenger car, that is a real consideration.

This page deals with one situation. The full overview is on Insuring a light quadricycle (brommobiel).

What to look out for

Four provisions that lead to a refusal on this policy more often than riding style does.

Keys, lock and where the vehicle is kept

After a theft the insurer asks for all keys and for proof that the prescribed security was fitted and in use. Keys left in the vehicle, a lock that was not fitted, or a storage address that differs from the one you gave, all lead to refusal. If your storage arrangements change, report that during the policy term.

Lending to someone else

If you lend out the light quadricycle, your policy remains the starting point, but cover applies only if the driver holds the required licence and meets the age requirement. A fifteen-year-old cousin taking it round the block falls outside every policy. If a named regular driver is stated on the policy schedule, structural use by someone else may also affect the basis of the premium.

Accessories and modifications

Extras such as an audio system, navigation, a roof rack or an adaptation for a disability usually come under a sub-limit for accessories, or are covered only if they have expressly been included. Have adaptations fitted after delivery listed separately, with invoices, or the payment after a loss will go no further than the standard specification.

Exclusions on own-damage cover

Outside the cover are: damage from freezing, damp or poor maintenance, loss of value after a repaired claim, and damage arising while the vehicle has been seized or is on its way to a repair business without this being reported. For intent and wilful recklessness, the statutory exclusion of Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Security fitted — an approved alarm or tracking system can bring the own-damage premium down
  • Storage location — a locked garage or the public road makes the biggest difference where theft is concerned
  • Value including accessories — adaptations count as soon as they are included in the cover
  • Additional sections chosen — personal accident or occupants' cover comes on top of the basic policy
  • Claims history — earlier claims count towards acceptance and premium
  • Payment term — annual payment is generally cheaper than monthly instalments

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

Do I have to use an approved lock if the light quadricycle is in the garage?

That depends on the wording of the clause. Some insurers make an exception for a locked space, others require it to be used at all times. Read the clause literally and do not assume what seems logical. If in doubt, use the security in any case, because the burden of proving that you did rests on you.

Am I insured if my passenger is injured?

Yes. A passenger travelling with you is a third party in law and can claim for injury against the compulsory third-party liability cover, even where you as the driver made the mistake. That applies to material damage and to injury. Your own injury falls outside it; for that you need additional cover.

What if the damage comes to more than the market value?

The vehicle is then declared a total loss and the insurer pays the value in accordance with the arrangement in the conditions, less the excess and the residual value of the wreck. Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code prevents you from receiving more than your actual loss; a higher sum insured therefore does not produce a higher payment.

Can I add the light quadricycle to my existing private package?

With many companies you can, with a package discount applying to all sections. Whether that works out cheaper on balance depends on the individual premiums and above all on the conditions for theft and valuation. We work out both options and also look at the excess per policy.
