Jewellery insurance: when the home contents policy falls short

Jewellery is rarely a single item: it is the total of heirlooms, gifts and everyday pieces that takes you over the limit on your contents policy.

In brief

On a home contents insurance there is one maximum for jewellery covering the whole category together. Anyone who owns three rings, a necklace, earrings and a watch is often already above it without having a single exceptional piece. So this is not a question about expensive jewellery, but about numbers.

This insurance therefore starts with taking stock: everything on the table, photographed, a value established for each piece and added up. Only then does it become clear whether a valuables policy is needed and which pieces have to be specified individually on it.

The second theme is the circle of people covered. A jewellery policy runs on a household, and with jewellery in particular it is children, partners and sometimes students living away from home who wear pieces listed on your policy. We record who is insured.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

The sub-limit applies to the category, not to each item

The limit on your contents policy is an amount for all jewellery together. If a jewellery box is taken in a burglary, payment is made up to that single amount, however many pieces were in it. So add up the replacement value of your whole collection before you decide that the contents policy is enough. In practice that total is the reason for switching.

Heirlooms have no receipt, but do need a valuation

Inherited jewellery arrives without a purchase invoice and is therefore rarely declared. In a theft you then have to prove both ownership and value, and a memory will not do that. Here a valuation is not a formality but the evidence. If the piece is then worn by a family member, check that that person is named as an insured on the policy schedule states.

The safe clause is read literally after a burglary

If your policy says that jewellery above a certain amount belongs in an approved safe whenever you are not wearing it, that is a condition and not advice. If it was in a drawer at the time of the burglary, payment is made up to that amount. Also note the grade of safe: a light furniture safe often does not meet the description the insurer uses.

Who wears your jewellery, and where they live

The cover applies to the insureds named on the policy. A daughter who takes a necklace to her student room moves the risk to an address that is not on the policy. Some policies cover that temporarily, others do not. Report a change in the household or in the address of those insured with you; that is one of the most commonly missed notifications on this policy.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Total sum insured for the collection — The added-up value of all the jewellery together, not the most expensive piece.
  • Number of specified items — Individual items with their own valuation are assessed differently from one combined entry.
  • Grade of safe and burglary protection — The type of safe and the home's locks and fittings determine the conditions of acceptance.
  • Postcode area of the home — The burglary risk in your area weighs heavily in this category.
  • Circle of people insured — The number of family members who wear the jewellery and whether they live at the same address.
  • Excess chosen — An excess per event or per item brings the premium down.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

Does the sub-limit apply per piece of jewellery or to everything together?

To everything together. The contents policy names one amount for the jewellery category. If the whole jewellery box is taken, payment is made up to that single amount, whatever the number of pieces. So add up the replacement value of your complete collection; that total determines whether a valuables policy is needed.

I have no receipts for my heirlooms. Can I insure them?

Yes, but have them valued. Without an invoice a valuation report is the evidence of both ownership and value. Also take photographs with a ruler alongside and keep them away from your home. Without supporting evidence, the argument after a burglary is mainly about what was in the box.

My daughter wears a piece of jewellery in her student room. Is that covered?

That depends on the policy. Those insured with you generally live at the risk address; a child living away from home is not automatically included. Some policy conditions have a temporary extension, others do not. Report the situation, and the address or the person is expressly added to the policy so that no argument arises afterwards.

What is never covered with jewellery?

Wear, discolouration and stones coming loose from a worn setting fall outside the cover, as does damage while a jeweller is altering or cleaning a piece. A fall in the gold price is not a loss within the meaning of the policy either. Loss is only covered on a valuables policy, never on the home contents insurance.
