What counts as fraud
Declaring a loss as higher than it was. Including old damage in a new claim. Altering a purchase receipt. Deliberately withholding something when taking out cover.
Also small untruths count. Fifty euros extra on a claim is the same category as five thousand.
How it is detected
Insurers compare notifications with one another, look at patterns and check details against other sources. If there is any doubt, an investigation by a loss adjuster follows.
Photographs contain date and location data; invoices can be verified with the supplier.
The consequences
No payment and recovery of what has already been paid, plus the costs of the investigation.
Registration in the External Referral Register for up to eight years. All insurers consult that register; during that period you will hardly be able to get a policy anywhere.
Cancellation of all your current policies with that insurer, and in serious cases a report to the police.
If in doubt
If you are unsure about something to do with a loss or about what you have to report, ask. You can always ask a question; adjusting a claim afterwards is a problem.

What is the EVR?

What do I do if I am in doubt?
Ask; you can always ask a question, correcting things afterwards is harder.
What is covered and what is not
What counts as fraud
| Situation | Counts as fraud | Payout |
|---|---|---|
| You declare the stolen bicycle as bought last year, when it is four years old | Yes | No |
| You overestimate the value of your coat and correct it as soon as the loss adjuster asks about it | No | Yes |
| You report a collision as parking damage because you drove into a bollard yourself | Yes | No |
| You do not mention an old claim that was not asked about on the application form either | No | Yes |
| Your partner adds old damage to the claim without your knowledge | Yes | Provided that |
| You submit the same claim to two insurers to see who pays first | Yes | No |
It is not the size of the amount that determines the outcome, but whether you deliberately gave an incorrect picture.
