Several motorcycles: no-claims years and shared storage

With two or three machines in the shed, everything comes down to two questions: how do you divide up the no-claims years, and what happens if something goes wrong in that one shed.

In brief

No-claims years do not belong to you personally but to a policy entry. They are registered per vehicle and per insured, and you can only have them counted on one entry at a time. If you add a second machine, that entry starts at an entry step, unless the insurer has a multi-vehicle arrangement.

The second point is almost always forgotten: accumulation. If three machines stand in the same garage, one fire or one break-in hits all three at once. Insurers then assess the total amount at one address and can set heavier requirements for anchoring, alarms or compartmentation.

What does not work: putting machines on the home contents or buildings insurance, because those exclude motor vehicles. Also not covered are theft during an RDW suspension without storage cover, use by a rider not named on the policy, and hire to third parties.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

No-claims years apply per entry, not per person

The registration in Roy-data links no-claims years to a vehicle and an insured. If you put a second machine on the policy, the same years cannot be used again there. When a claim is made, moreover, only the step on the entry the claim fell under drops, not that of the other machines. Ask expressly about a multi-vehicle arrangement or a package discount, because it is rarely offered unprompted.

Everything in one shed is one insured event

Fire, storm or a break-in at the storage hits the whole collection at once. To an insurer that is a different risk from three separate machines at three addresses, and it can lead to a requirement for ground anchors, an alarm system or a certified lock per machine. An important detail: your home contents and buildings policies do not cover motor vehicles, not even where they were inside when the shed burned down.

Record for each machine who the regular rider is

If your partner or one of your children rides one of the machines, that person should be named as the regular rider on the entry concerned. A young rider on the heaviest machine changes the risk fundamentally. If the statement is wrong, the insurer can fall back on Articles 7:928 and 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Codewhen a claim is made. Lend with care and record who rides what and when.

Suspending saves premium, but takes cover away too

A machine you do not use in winter can be suspended with the RDW; the duty to insure under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM) then lapses. What many people do not know is that own-damage cover lapses with it, while theft from a shed happens in exactly those months. Ask about storage or winter cover under which fire and theft continue while the third-party liability cover rests.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Number of vehicles on one policy — Determines whether a package or multi-vehicle arrangement is possible and on what terms.
  • Total value at one storage address — The combined list price in the same space determines the accumulation risk.
  • Distribution of the no-claims years — Which entry the years built up sit on and which step the other entries start at.
  • Number and age of the drivers — More riders on one policy means a broader risk than a single rider.
  • Security of the shared storage — Ground anchors, an alarm and the number of locks per machine count in the theft element.
  • Mileage per machine — With several machines you rarely cover much on all of them; a realistic split lowers the premium.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

Can I use my no-claims years on two machines?

Not as standard. The years are recorded in Roy-data against one vehicle entry and cannot be used twice. The second machine therefore starts at an entry step. Some insurers have a multi-vehicle arrangement under which your step carries across to a second vehicle; ask about it expressly, because it is almost never offered unprompted.

Does one policy for all the machines give a discount?

Often it does, in the form of a package or multi-vehicle discount, but the effect varies widely between insurers. Weigh that against the drawback: with one policy, a claim or a cancellation affects all the vehicles at once. Have both options costed, with and without combining, before you place everything with the same company.

Are my machines covered if the shed burns down?

Not through the buildings or home contents insurance; those exclude motor vehicles, even where they were inside. Only own-damage cover on the motorcycle policy itself pays for fire damage. If several machines stand in the same space, report that, because the insurer assesses the total amount at risk at one address.

What happens if I suspend one machine?

On suspension through the RDW the duty to insure lapses, and with it the third-party liability cover, but in the standard set-up own-damage cover lapses as well. Theft from the shed is then not insured. Ask about storage or winter cover that keeps fire, storm and theft running while the machine takes no part in traffic.
