Other insurance not included: what is not in your package?

The phrase excluding other insurance simply means that a stated cover or price relates only to that one policy. Anything not in it, you arrange separately.

In brief

On quotations and policy schedules the wording excluding other insurance appears regularly. It is not a term of cover but a delimitation: what is stated applies only to that policy, and other insurance you have or need falls outside it. With a package policy that is relevant, because a package discount and cover are two different things.

In a package policy you place several policies with one company: home contents, buildings, liability, legal expenses and motor, for example. That usually produces a discount and one point of contact. What is not automatically included are health insurance, disability and term life insurance, and all business cover. Those remain separate, even if the package is called complete .

The question that really matters is not what falls outside the package, but whether a gap arises. Valuables above a limit, a business at home, a second home, a trailer, a let room: each of those is a situation the standard policy is not intended for. See also what types of insurance there are.

What is usually in a package and what is not

Three groups determine whether a cover falls inside or outside the package.

Usually in

Personal non-life insurance

The policies usually placed in one package.

  • Home contents and buildings
  • Personal liability
  • Legal expenses and travel
  • Car, motorcycle or moped
Always separate

Healthcare and income

Separated from the general insurance package by law or by design.

  • Health insurance with its own excess
  • Disability and death cover
  • Pensions and annuities
  • Their own notice periods and rules
Often forgotten

Unusual situations

Risks that fall outside a package's standard cover.

  • A business or practice at home
  • A second home or holiday home
  • Valuables above the limit
  • A trailer, boat or caravan

What is covered

Liability as a private individualYesNo
Valuables above the policy limitNoYes

What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) that you receive before you take out cover.

Two pitfalls with separate and bundled policies

A gap and an overlap both cost you money; the first at a claim, the second every month.

Look for the gaps first, then the discount

A package discount is welcome, but says nothing about whether your risks are covered. Typical gaps: a a business at home that is not covered on a private policy, valuables above the limit for jewellery or audiovisual equipment, a trailer that causes damage on its own, or a let room that changes the use of the home. If your situation changes, report it: the duty of disclosure under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code applies on entering into the contract, and an incorrect declaration can cause the payout to lapse under Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code.

What is in no package at all

However complete a package may be, certain things remain outside the cover. Never covered are damage caused by intent or recklessness under Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code, damage caused by wear, deferred maintenance and design faults, and damage that already existed or was to be expected when you took out the policy. business liability also falls outside personal liability insurance (AVP). If an event occurs that you want to report, do so as soon as reasonably possible (Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code).

What does your premium depend on?

  • Number of policies in the package — determines the package discount
  • Sums insured — per underlying policy
  • The types of cover chosen — basic, extended or all risks
  • Excess — sometimes different for each section
  • Composition of the household — a family, a single person or a couple
  • Claims history — over the past few years

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

What does excluding other insurance mean on a quotation?

That the cover, premium or discount stated relates solely to the policy set out in the quotation. Other insurance you have running elsewhere does not count and is not included. It is a delimitation, not an exclusion of a risk. If you want to know what you pay and cover in total, set all the policy schedules side by side.

Is a package policy better value than separate policies?

Often yes on premium, through the package discount and one set of policy charges. The real advantage, though, lies in the overview: one point of contact and one moment at which everything is gone through. The disadvantage is that you are tied to one company, even if another insurer has better conditions on a particular part. So judge section by section and not only on the total price.

Can I be double insured without knowing it?

Yes, and it happens more often than people think. Think of glass cover appearing on both the buildings and the contents policy, legal expenses cover partly in the motor policy and partly in a separate policy, or travel cover through a credit card alongside annual travel insurance. Being double insured does not mean being paid twice. A periodic check of all the policy schedules brings this to light.

Which insurance policies are compulsory in the Netherlands?

Two: health insurance for everyone who lives or works in the Netherlands, and third-party liability insurance for motor vehicles under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM) for as long as the registration is in your name. All other insurance is voluntary, although a mortgage lender can require buildings insurance and a tenancy agreement or a client can make liability cover compulsory.
