How do you choose cover for an exclusive car?

On a high-value car the choice is not about the type of cover but about three arrangements: how the value is established, who may repair the car and what security the insurer requires.

  • several insurers compared objectively
  • 9.5 customer rating for a new policy

In brief

The most important choice on an exclusive car is the determination of value. A standard policy pays out on market value in a total loss, and that is determined using the usual price guides. For a small series, a specific version or a car with an extensive option list, those guides produce an amount that has little to do with the market. A a valuation report from a recognised expert solves that: under Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code the valued amount counts as an agreed value for the period named in the policy, and within that period the insurer cannot rely on a lower value.

The second choice concerns repair. Have it recorded that the car goes to a brand-affiliated or importer-approved repairer and that original parts are used. Without that arrangement the insurer may direct you to the repair network it has agreements with. Also ask about an arrangement for long delivery times and about payment for loss of value; not every policy has that.

The third choice is the security. On cars above a certain value, insurers impose requirements: an approved alarm and tracking system of a prescribed class, sometimes combined with a requirement about storage. If those are not met, theft is not covered — even if the car has everything else. Have those requirements recorded in writing and keep the installation certificate.

What to select on with a high-value car

The type of cover is almost always comprehensive; the difference lies in these three elements.

The value

Valuation in advance

A report from a recognised expert fixes the value for a set period.

  • Basis in Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code
  • No discussion about valuation guides
  • Options and version included
  • Revaluation once the period expires
The repair

Brand-affiliated repair

Arrangements about the repairer, parts and replacement transport belong in the policy.

  • Original parts instead of copies
  • Record the free choice of repairer
  • An arrangement for long delivery times
  • Loss of value sometimes insured
The risk

Security and use

Insurers impose requirements on the alarm, tracking system, storage and mileage.

  • An approved system of the prescribed class
  • Sometimes a requirement of locked storage
  • A mileage or seasonal limit
  • Key management counts in the event of theft

Four points that determine the outcome

On a high-value car the difference lies not in the premium but in these arrangements.

Market value is a poor starting point on these cars

Price guides are built on volume models. With a limited production run, a hand-built engine or a car with a substantial option pack, comparable transactions are missing, so that the outcome is systematically too low. A a valuation in advance prevents that argument at the moment you least want it. Have the policy state how long the valued amount applies; if the period expires, you fall back on market value.

Security requirements are not advice but a condition

If the policy states that the car must have an approved alarm and vehicle tracking system of a certain class, that is a warranty clause. If the system is missing or the subscription is not active, cover lapses in the event of theft. The same applies to a requirement about storage in a locked space. Keep the installation certificate and the subscription confirmation with the policy, and report it straight away if you change garage or home address.

What is not covered

Even on the widest policy these items remain outside the cover: driving on a circuit and taking part in speed, regularity or skill events, including at a touring event; hire, car-sharing or chauffeur services without express permission; and wear, mechanical and electronic defects without a collision, such as a faulty transmission or failed air suspension. Damage through intent or recklessness is also excluded under Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code, and theft cover lapses if the keys have been left in or near the car.

Report changes to the car before the work is done

An increase in power, a different exhaust, modified suspension or non-factory wheels change the risk and sometimes the value. Report them in advance: on taking out the policy the duty of disclosure in Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code and a breach can reduce or void the payout (Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code). Also have modifications included in the valuation, otherwise they are not insured in a total loss. Report a claim as soon as you reasonably can (Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code).

What does your premium depend on?

  • Agreed value — the basis of calculation for the policy
  • Power and model type — claims burden and repair costs
  • Security class — alarm and tracker
  • Where it is kept and the postcode area — the risk of theft differs per location
  • Mileage and use — daily or fine weather only
  • The driver's experience — age and no-claims years

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

When is a valuation worthwhile?

As soon as the market value does not reliably follow from price guides: with small series, youngtimers and classics, imported examples and cars with many factory options. The valuation fixes the value for the period named in the policy, usually a few years. A revaluation follows after that. Without a valuation the insurer pays market value in a total loss, with the price guide as the starting point.

May I choose my own repairer?

That depends on the policy. Many insurers steer towards their own repair network and reduce the excess if you use it. If you want brand-affiliated repairs with original parts, have that expressly included in the policy. On unusual cars that is no luxury: a repair outside the brand channel can affect the value and the provenance documentation.

What security does an insurer require?

Usually an approved alarm system combined with a vehicle tracking system with an active subscription, where the class required rises with the value. Sometimes a requirement about storage is added. These requirements are set out as conditions in the policy: if they are not met, theft is not covered. Ask what is required before you buy, because installation takes time.

Is damage during a track day covered?

No. Driving on a circuit falls outside virtually every car policy, even where no times are taken and it is offered as a touring run. The same applies to regularity and skill events. If you do want to go on the circuit, separate temporary cover is needed; do not assume it without written confirmation.

What happens with long delivery times for parts?

On exclusive cars the repair time can run to months. So check whether the policy has an arrangement for replacement transport with a suitable period and whether storage costs while waiting are paid. Without an arrangement about that you bear those costs yourself. Also record what happens if a part is no longer available.
