Non-life insurance
These pay for the loss suffered: what you have actually lost. Think of buildings, home contents, motor, liability and business interruption cover.
The payment is never higher than the loss; you may not end up better off.
Fixed-sum insurance
These pay a fixed amount when an event occurs, regardless of the actual loss. Think of personal accident insurance or term life insurance.
That distinction is set out in Article 7:964 of the Dutch Civil Code and it matters: fixed-sum insurance does not replace liability cover.
Healthcare and income
The basic health insurance is compulsory, with voluntary supplementary packages.
With income it is about incapacity for work: for employees through the WIA and supplementary cover, for the self-employed through disability insurance (AOV).
Business
Liability in four forms — AVB, BAV, directors' and officers' and cyber — plus property and continuity: business contents, business interruption, machinery breakdown and transport.
Frequently asked questions
The questions we are asked most often about this.
What is indemnity insurance?
It pays the loss actually suffered; you must not be better off as a result.
What is fixed-sum insurance?
It pays a fixed amount regardless of the actual loss.
Does personal accident insurance replace liability cover?
No; that pays a fixed amount instead of the loss suffered.
Which business liabilities are there?
AVB, BAV, directors' and officers' liability and cyber; they do not overlap.
What covers income for a self-employed professional?
Disability insurance (AOV); employee insurance schemes do not apply to the self-employed.
Where is the distinction set out in law?
Among other places, in Article 7:964 of the Dutch Civil Code on fixed-sum insurance.
What is covered and what is not
What is covered
| Situation | Indemnity insurance | Fixed-sum insurance |
|---|---|---|
| Your home burns down and has to be rebuilt | Yes | No |
| You lose the tip of a finger doing DIY with a circular saw | No | Yes |
| You die and your partner is left with the mortgage | No | Yes |
| Your bicycle is stolen at the station | Yes | No |
| You become unable to work and your turnover as a self-employed person falls away | Provided that | Yes |
| Your dog bites a passer-by who is injured | Yes | No |
Both forms can run alongside each other: a fixed amount from the right-hand column does not replace the payment from the left-hand column.
