Camper van insurance through Vereende

Not every camper van fits the standard acceptance framework: self-builds, imports and conversions are the first to fall outside it, and that is where the search really begins.

In brief

Most camper van insurance assumes a factory-built camper van with a Dutch registration history and an owner with no claims record. If your situation does not meet that, a rejection follows without anyone looking at the actual risk. Vereende exists precisely for those cases: camper vans that cannot be placed elsewhere and owners who, after a policy has been cancelled or a series of claims, can no longer find cover anywhere.

In practice it comes down to four categories. A self-built or converted van conversion with no manufacturer's file. An imported camper van with no Dutch claims history. A camper van over 3,500 kilograms for which a category C1 licence is needed. And an owner with a previous cancellation or registration. Each of those four calls for its own supporting evidence on the application.

Acceptance is the real work here; the type of cover itself differs little from a regular camper van policy. If you are looking for a standard product for a factory-built camper van with no unusual features, first look at camper van insurance through Unigarant.

The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.

Third-party liability insurance

Third-party liability insurance is required by law and covers damage you cause to others with your motorhome, not damage to your own motorhome.

  • Damage to other vehicles
  • Injury to third parties
  • Damage to buildings and objects
  • Damage caused by passengers

Third-party liability + fire and theft

Alongside third-party liability cover, protection against damage to your own car from external causes you cannot prevent.

  • Fire and storm damage
  • Theft and burglary
  • Windscreen breakage and glass damage
  • Collision with animals

Comprehensive insurance

The most complete cover, including for damage you cause yourself, theft and total loss. We compare Vereende's comprehensive version with the market.

  • Hail damage
  • Damage through your own fault
  • Vandalism
  • Unknown party at fault

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Self-build and conversion: the value can only be shown by valuation

A self-converted panel van has no list price. The van itself may be worth little, but it contains a kitchen, a water system, insulation, a solar panel and hundreds of hours of work. Without a valuation report, a total loss is settled on the market value of the bare van. A valuation in advance under Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code records the value of the conversion and, with a self-build, is not a formality but the core of the cover.

Imports and the missing claims history

With a camper van brought in from abroad there is no Dutch no-claims history. Insurers cannot then fall back on the usual central claims data and assess the application as an unknown risk. Foreign no-claims years are sometimes recognised if you produce a statement from the previous insurer. If you withhold previous claims or an earlier cancellation, that directly affects the duty of disclosure in Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code and with it your cover.

Gas installation, electrics and the inspection

On a converted or self-built camper van the gas and electrical installation is the greatest fire risk and at the same time the point on which a claim fails. If a fire arises from an installation that was not built to the applicable standard or has not been inspected, that is an inherent defect and the damage falls outside the cover. An inspection report with the application not only helps with acceptance, but also prevents discussion after fire damage.

Permanent occupation is not a camper van risk

Camper van insurance assumes recreational use with a permanent home address elsewhere. If you live in it permanently, the risk changes in character: contents are in it constantly, the vehicle stands for long periods in changing places, and there is daily cooking and heating. Almost every insurer excludes permanent occupation. Hire, whether or not through a sharing platform, also falls outside the cover unless it has been expressly insured in advance.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Origin and registration — An import, a self-build or a converted panel van, and the way the registration has been recorded, steer the acceptance.
  • Agreed value including the conversion — Without a list price, the valuation report forms the basis of calculation for both the premium and the payout.
  • Weight class and driving licence category — Above 3,500 kilograms a category C1 licence is needed and the camper van falls outside the regular acceptance framework.
  • Claims and cancellation history — The number of previous claims, the reason for a cancellation and any registrations determine whether acceptance is possible.
  • Inspection of the gas and electrical installation — A valid inspection report on a self-build or conversion is an acceptance condition with many providers.
  • Storage address and form of use — Where the camper van stands out of season and whether it is hired out both count in the assessment.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

Can I insure a self-built camper van?

Yes, but not with every provider and not without supporting evidence. Obtain a valuation report in which the conversion has been valued, and arrange an inspection report for the gas and electrical installation. Without a valuation, a total loss is settled on the market value of the bare panel van and the value of your interior and installations goes unpaid.

What if my policy has been cancelled before?

Then a regular insurer is usually no longer an option and a provider for special risks comes into view. The condition is that you declare the full history: the reason for the cancellation, the number of claims and any registrations. That is your duty of disclosure under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code. Withholding information leads to rejection of the first claim and another cancellation of the policy.

Can an imported camper van be insured without no-claims years?

It can, but you then start without any accrued discount. If you can produce a statement from your foreign insurer setting out your no-claims years, some insurers will take those over in whole or in part. Also have the value assessed, because with an imported vehicle there is often no usable Dutch list price on which to base own-damage cover.

May I live in my camper van permanently?

On camper van insurance, almost never. That policy assumes recreational use alongside a permanent home address. Permanent occupation changes the risk fundamentally: contents are in it constantly and there is daily cooking and heating, which increases the fire risk. If you really do live in it, report that so that we can look for cover that suits the situation.
