Your belongings · other people's belongings · no overlap

Home contents or liability: what is the difference?

Home contents insurance covers your belongings. Personal liability insurance covers other people's belongings that you damage. It does not get simpler than that.

Home contents insurance

Covers everything standing loose in your home: furniture, appliances, clothing, crockery. For fire, water damage, burglary and, with comprehensive cover, your own mishaps at home as well.

Pay attention to the sub-limits for jewellery, audiovisual equipment and collections; these may be lower than what you own.

The liability insurance

Covers damage you cause at others . If you knock over a television at a friend's house, that is liability and not your contents cover.

Family members and pets are included; that is why almost everyone has this policy.

Where people come unstuck

Care, custody and control: damage to items in your care — borrowed, hired or held in safekeeping — is often covered only in part or excluded under personal liability insurance.

A borrowed drill that you drop therefore falls between the two policies: it is not your contents and is often not covered because of the care, custody and control exclusion.

What you need

Both, and together they cost less than people think. Home contents insurance for what you own, personal liability insurance for what you may cause.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference?

Contents covers your own belongings; liability covers damage you cause to other people.

What if I break something at a friend's house?

That is liability, not your home contents insurance.

Are my children covered as well?

Under personal liability insurance yes; family members and pets are included as standard.

What is the care, custody and control exclusion?

Damage to items in your care; that is often covered only in part or excluded.

What about borrowed tools?

They fall under care, custody and control and are often not covered; check before you borrow anything.

Do I need both?

Yes; they cover opposite things and do not overlap.
