Comparing home contents insurance (inboedelverzekering): how to save without giving up cover

Comparing on premium alone rarely produces a saving. The difference lies in the sum insured, the limits for valuables and the excess.

In brief

The premium for home contents insurance (inboedelverzekering) follows from the sum insured: the value of everything you would take with you when moving, expressed as replacement value as new. Insurers establish it with a contents value calculator, which takes account of household composition, age, type of home and income. If you complete it correctly, most insurers give a guarantee against underinsurance: no reduction is applied to a claim on the grounds that the sum is too low.

Anyone comparing on premium is often comparing unequal policies. A lower premium usually stems from a higher excess, a narrower form of cover or lower limits for jewellery, audiovisual equipment and collections. Those limits are concrete: above a certain amount your valuable item is only partly paid for, even if the total sum insured is more than enough. With valuable belongings, that calls for separate valuables cover.

Real savings usually lie elsewhere: clearing out duplicate cover, deliberately choosing an excess, paying annually instead of monthly, and bundling your policies. Also compare what you already have elsewhere. See also how buildings and contents cover fit together and what home contents insurance does not cover.

Where do policies differ?

Three elements explain almost the whole premium difference between providers.

The basis

Sum insured

The replacement value as new of your belongings, established with a contents value calculator.

  • Completing it correctly gives a guarantee
  • Too low: a proportionate reduction
  • Revise after a move or purchase
  • Replacement value as new, not market value
The form

Extended or comprehensive

Extended cover pays for named causes, comprehensive also for unnamed accidents at home.

  • Extended: fire, water, theft after forced entry
  • Comprehensive: knocking things over and dropping them too
  • Exclusions remain in both forms
  • Always narrower away from home
The limits

Limits and excess

Valuables have a maximum per category, separate from the total sum.

  • Jewellery and watches limited
  • Audiovisual sometimes capped separately
  • Declare art and collections separately
  • A higher excess lowers the premium

What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) that you receive before you take out cover.

Four ways to save that actually work

Saving without stripping the cover calls for different choices than simply the lowest premium.

Clear out duplicate cover

Glass often appears on both the buildings and the contents policy. Bicycles, phones and travel luggage are sometimes covered both by a separate policy and through the contents cover. You will never be paid twice for the same loss, but you do pay premium twice. Set your policy schedules side by side and delete what overlaps; that is the most direct saving there is.

Choose an excess you can bear

A higher voluntary excess lowers the premium noticeably. The downside is that you pay small claims yourself, and those make up the bulk of notifications. As a rule of thumb, take an amount you can do without borrowing. Do not lower the excess as a lever on the premium, but match it to your reserves.

Do not skimp on the sum insured

A lower sum gives a lower premium, but leads to underinsurance: the insurer then pays proportionately less than your loss. With a home burnt out completely, that is the difference between refurnishing and not refurnishing. Complete the contents value calculator honestly and revise the sum after a move, building work or major purchases. That costs premium and delivers certainty.

Know what is never covered

Excluded are, among others wear, ageing and inherent defect, damage caused by vermin, mould and slowly penetrating damp, and damage caused by intent or recklessness under Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code. On the accompanying buildings policy, subsidence, foundation damage, pile rot, deferred maintenance and design faults remain outside the cover. A cheap policy does not make those exclusions any smaller.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Sum insured — the main basis for calculation
  • Postcode area — burglary and water risk
  • Type of home and construction type — flat, terraced house or detached
  • Type of cover — extended or comprehensive
  • Excess — higher amount, lower premium
  • Extensions and limits — glass, valuables, away from home

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

How do I set the right sum insured?

With the insurer's contents value calculator. It works with household composition, age, type of home and income, and arrives at an amount in replacement value as new. If you complete the calculator correctly, most insurers give a guarantee against underinsurance. Revise the sum after a move, building work or major purchases; otherwise the actual value quietly drifts away from your policy.

Why is my expensive watch not paid for in full?

Because contents policies have a limit per category. Jewellery, watches, art, collections and sometimes audiovisual equipment are paid up to a maximum amount, regardless of how high your total sum insured is. Above that limit, separate valuables cover is needed, usually with a valuation report or purchase invoice. Declare valuable pieces before anything happens.

Is comprehensive cover worth it?

That depends on your household. Comprehensive cover also pays for unnamed causes inside the home, such as knocking something over or dropping it, and that makes a difference with children, pets or expensive equipment. The standard exclusions remain in place under comprehensive cover too: wear and tear, inherent defect, vermin and deliberate acts fall outside. Compare the extra premium with the additional cover you actually get.

Does switching to another insurer really save money?

Sometimes, but not automatically. Compare not only the premium but also the form of cover, the excess, the limits and whether a guarantee against underinsurance applies. Watch the contract term and the notice period of your current policy; after the first year most contracts can be cancelled on a daily basis. We handle the cancellation when you switch.

Are my belongings insured away from home?

Only to a limited extent. Belongings you take with you often carry a lower maximum amount and a narrow set of causes, for example only theft after forced entry from a locked space. Contents in a communal store, garage box or garden shed are sometimes excluded or limited. Check this if you keep some of your belongings elsewhere.
