Insuring Cartier jewellery and watches

With Cartier a large part of the value lies in the design and the setting, and that makes both the valuation and the repair a different discussion from gold by the gram.

In brief

A Cartier piece consists of precious metal, stones and a recognisable design. A valuer who only adds up the gold weight and the carat value arrives at an amount for which you will not buy the piece back. When a loss occurs the insurer pays what has been valued, not what you believe it is worth.

The second question only arises after the loss: where may it be repaired? Repair at the brand's own workshop costs more than at an independent goldsmith, and not every policy pays that difference. Set out in advance what happens in the event of damage, the loss of a stone or a dent in a polished surface.

On the application we ask for the purchase invoice, the certificate and the serial number, and have the valuation drawn up so that the design and the stones are named separately. See also insuring jewellery for how this is set up where there are several pieces.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Have the design valued separately, not just the material

A valuation that comes out at melt value plus stones does no justice to a piece whose model determines the price. Ask for a valuation report describing the design, the setting and the individual stones with their gradings. Only then does the valuation within the meaning of Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code also fix the value attached to the brand and not merely the raw material.

Establish in advance where repairs may be carried out

After damage the insurer will want to repair rather than pay. Whether that is done at the brand's workshop or at a goldsmith appointed by the insurer makes a difference to the residual value and to the piece's provenance papers. Set out the method of repair on the policy schedule. Without an agreement the insurer chooses the repairer, and the loss in value after repair is usually not insured.

A stone falling out of its setting is not automatically covered

If a stone comes loose because the setting has worn over the years, the exclusion applies for wear and tear and gradual deterioration. If the stone falls out after a fall or a knock, there is a sudden event. Have settings checked periodically and keep the record of that check; when you claim, that is the only distinction that counts.

Certificate, serial number and provenance determine the claim

With a second-hand purchase the box, the certificate and the original invoice are often missing. That is not a problem for the cover, but it is one for proving ownership if the piece is stolen. Record serial numbers and photographs and keep them away from your home. When you notify a loss under Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code the insurer asks for exactly this support.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Valued amount per piece — Each piece of jewellery or watch is declared separately with its own valuation amount.
  • Share of gemstones in the value — Pieces whose value lies largely in the stones are assessed differently from solid gold.
  • Agreed method of repair — Repair through the brand's workshop is more expensive and feeds through into the premium.
  • Safe clause and safe grade — The requirement to store pieces above a given amount, and the type of safe you have.
  • How often it is worn away from home — Pieces worn daily run more risk than pieces kept for special occasions.
  • Whether certificates are available — Fully documented pieces make valuation and loss assessment simpler.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

My piece has been valued on its gold weight. Is that enough?

No. With a branded piece the replacement value is usually above the material value, because you are buying the design back and not the gold. Ask for a valuation in which the model, the setting and the stones are described separately. Otherwise the insurer duly pays what is stated, and you still fall short when replacing it.

Will my jewellery be repaired or will I get money?

The policy decides that, not you. Most insurers opt for repair where that is possible. If you want the brand's workshop to do the work, have that set out in advance. Any loss in value remaining after a repair is excluded on most policies, unless a separate provision has been included for it.

I have lost a stone from my ring. Is that covered?

That depends on the cause. After a fall or a knock there is a sudden event and there is usually cover. If the setting has become worn, the exclusion for wear and tear applies. A periodic check of the setting is therefore both loss prevention and evidence.

I no longer have the purchase receipt. Can I insure the piece?

Yes. A current valuation replaces the purchase receipt as the basis for the insured value. To prove ownership after a theft you do need photographs, the serial number and a valuation report. Keep those details digitally and away from your home, so that they do not disappear along with the jewellery.
