The three main types
Third-party liability covers damage to others and is compulsory. Third-party, fire and theft adds fixed causes: fire, storm, theft, glass damage and a collision with an animal. Comprehensive also covers damage you cause yourself.
The extensions that matter
Motor legal expenses cover: helps in recovering your loss from an other party who does not cooperate.
Personal accident cover for occupants: pays a fixed amount for injury to or the death of occupants, whoever is at fault.
Occupants' accident and damage insurance: covers the actual losses of occupants and is wider than the previous one.
Replacement transport: important if you depend on the car.
Breakdown assistance: at home, abroad or both.
What to watch when comparing
The replacement value as new period: one year as against three years makes a difference of thousands of euros in a total loss.
The excess, and whether that differs for glass damage or for repairs through an approved firm.
What is covered nowhere
Wear and mechanical defects. A broken gearbox is not sudden external damage and falls outside every form of own-damage cover.

The first pays a fixed amount, the second covers the actual losses.
What do I compare on?
On the replacement value as new period and the excess, not only on the premium.
Is a broken gearbox covered?
No; that is a mechanical defect and not sudden damage.
Do I need motor legal expenses cover?
Useful where an other party does not cooperate in recovering your loss.
What is breakdown assistance?
Help with a breakdown on the road, at home or abroad; often a separate module.
What is covered and what is not
What is covered
| Situation | Third-party liability | Comprehensive |
|---|---|---|
| While pulling away you knock the mirror off a parked car | Yes | Yes |
| Your passenger is injured in a collision you caused yourself | Yes | Yes |
| You lend the car to a friend without a valid licence and he causes damage | Yes | No |
| A hailstorm dents the roof and the bonnet | No | Yes |
| You put petrol in your diesel car and the engine cuts out | No | Provided that |
| After twelve years rust comes through the paint below the doors | No | No |
Third-party liability always pays the other party and never you; with comprehensive cover the question shifts to what came suddenly from outside.
