Car makes and what they do to your premium

Insurers do not price by make but by model version. Two cars of the same make can therefore fall into very different premium groups.

In brief

Motor insurance is taken out on the registration number, not the make. Behind that registration number sits a version code to which insurers attach a premium group. That group follows from the list price, kerb weight and power output, and is adjusted for the measured claims burden of that specific type: how often claims are made, what an average repair costs and how often the model is stolen. The badge on the grille therefore says little; the version says everything. An entry-level model and the sports version of the same model can be several groups apart.

What does distinguish makes are the repair costs. Premium makes more often use aluminium body panels, matrix LED lighting and sensors in the bumper and windscreen, which turns a light collision into an expensive repair including recalibration of the driver assistance systems. For makes with a small dealer network in the Netherlands, parts lead times also play a part. And for a few models with keyless entry, insurers impose additional security requirements before they will provide own-damage cover.

For the application this means one thing: give the exact version and the registration number. With an import or parallel import the version and the original list price may differ from the Dutch reference, which affects the premium and the way the value is established when you claim. Make sure the registration document and the policy match each other. As to premium, for every make 21% insurance premium taxapplies, and your no-claims years from Roy-data simply transfer to another car.

Which cover suits which type of car?

The types of cover are the same whatever the make; the trade-off differs with the value and the repair costs.

Compulsory

Third-party liability

The legally required cover, whatever the make or version.

  • Compulsory under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM)
  • Suitable where the market value is low
  • No cover for your own car
  • Also personal injury to third parties
Intermediate option

Third-party liability + fire and theft

Covers theft, glass, fire, storm and collision with animals — relevant for models prone to theft.

  • Theft and burglary damage
  • Glass damage including camera recalibration
  • Sometimes additional security requirements
  • Damage you cause yourself falls outside this
Widest form of cover

Comprehensive

Worthwhile as long as repair costs exceed what you are willing to carry yourself.

  • Single-vehicle damage and parking damage
  • A replacement-value-as-new or purchase-value arrangement
  • Sensible for longer where the electronics are expensive
  • The excess determines part of the premium

What is covered

Recalibration of sensors after replacing the windscreenNoYes
Damage to an imported car with a non-standard versionYesProvided that

What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) that you receive before you take out cover.

What differs by make and model

Four points that explain why two comparable cars still work out differently.

The version determines the premium group, not the make

Insurers use a national classification by version code. Within it, the ratio between power and weight counts heavily: a compact car with a sports engine falls higher than a larger car with a basic engine. So always ask for a premium based on the registration number and not on the model name. An application based on 'the model' produces a premium that is adjusted at final acceptance, and in the worst case an argument at claim time.

Parts and the dealer network determine the repair time

For makes with a limited network in the Netherlands it can take weeks for a part to arrive. So look at the arrangements for replacement transport and at the maximum period for it. With American and other imported models there is the added point that not every repairer works to the right specifications. Have it recorded whether you have a free choice of repairer; otherwise the insurer will direct you to its own repair network.

What is not covered

Whatever the make, these items stay outside the cover: wear and tear and mechanical or electronic defects without a collision, including warranty matters; taking part in speed or skill trials and driving on a track; and driving under the influence or without a valid driving licence. Undisclosed departures from the factory specification, such as chip tuning or modified suspension, may also lead to refusal. For intent and recklessness the exclusion of Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code.

Disclose modifications and imports in advance

An increase in power output, different wheels, a sports exhaust or an LPG installation changes the risk and sometimes the premium group. Report it before the modification; when you take out the policy the duty of disclosure of Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code and a breach can reduce or void the payout (Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Codeapplies). With an imported car, declare its origin and the actual specification, so that the value at claim time is not based on the wrong reference.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Version code from the registration document — decisive for the premium group
  • List price and power output — the ratio to the weight counts
  • Repair costs for the model — parts and electronics
  • Theft figures per model — sometimes extra security requirements
  • No-claims years and age — your own profile
  • Postcode and mileage — region and use

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

Are German premium makes always more expensive to insure?

Not as a make, but they are per version. The basic versions of premium models sit close to comparable volume cars, while the sports and top versions come out considerably higher because of power, list price and repair costs. What feeds through are aluminium panels, LED lighting and sensors that have to be recalibrated after a collision. So always compare on the registration number.

Does my premium change if I switch within the same make?

Yes, because the premium is tied to the version. If you move from a basic version to a sports version, the premium group changes even though the model has the same name. Your no-claims years remain and transfer with you. Report the change before the vehicle is registered in your name, so that the new car is insured from day one.

What does importing mean for my cover?

With an imported vehicle the specification, options and original list price may differ from the Dutch reference. That affects the premium group and, above all, how the value is established on a total loss. Declare the import when you apply and, for an unusual car, consider a valuation, so that the value is fixed for a set period under Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code.

Do insurers impose security requirements for certain models?

For models that are stolen more often, and for cars above a certain value, that happens regularly. It usually involves an approved alarm and tracking system, sometimes with an active subscription. If such a requirement appears in the policy, it is a condition: without the system, theft is not covered. Ask about the requirement before you buy, because fitting takes time.

Does the price when new count, or what I paid?

For the premium group, the original list price of the version counts, even if you bought the car second-hand for less. For the payout after a loss, the market value counts, or the replacement value as new while a new-for-old arrangement runs. Those two concepts are often confused; check in the policy which arrangement applies and for how long.
