Bungee jumping and your insurance

Bungee jumping is an activity for which no training at all is needed and in which someone else chooses your equipment, and it is that combination which puts it in the highest risk category with insurers.

In brief

With virtually every sport for which you need an extension, you build up experience and learn to judge risks. Not with bungee jumping: you arrive, are weighed, sign and jump. The provider decides which cord suits your weight and how the installation is built up. You hand over control of the risk entirely, and that is exactly what explains the classification in the highest category.

The injury pattern is also unusual. Because you fall head down and are braked abruptly, complaints often concern the eyes, neck and back: retinal problems, bruising in the eyelids and muscle and vertebral complaints. That is injury which can arise without anything having gone wrong, and then there is nobody who is liable.

If the jump does go wrong because of a mistake, Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code applies to the provider, Article 6:185 DCC where a cord is defective, and Article 6:174 DCC if the crane or the platform was not in order. Such proceedings take a long time and, for a jump abroad, are conducted under foreign law. Your own cover pays in the meantime.

What does your insurance cover for bungee jumping?

The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.

The essentials

Declare in advance

What you do not declare is not covered.

  • Notify before departure
  • Surcharge or separate module
  • Also for one-off participation
Note all three

Three covers

They do not always run in step.

  • Medical expenses
  • Accidents and disability
  • Liability

  • Arranging a guarantee
  • Salvage and repatriation
  • Keep all receipts

What is covered

SituationStandardWith extension
Medical expenses after an accidentNoYes
Rescue and salvage costsNoYes
Permanent disabilityNoSometimes
Liability towards third partiesSometimesYes
Taking part in competitionNoSometimes
Taking part without the required qualificationNoNo

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Someone else chooses your cord

The cord is chosen on the basis of the weight you state and of the temperature and humidity at that moment. If you give the wrong weight yourself, that works against you both in holding the provider liable and in your own claim. Weigh yourself on the spot and correct the provider if the figure written down is wrong. Keep the participation form: it shows which details were used to prepare the jump.

Injury without anyone making a mistake

Eye and neck complaints after a correctly executed jump do occur. There is then no liable party, because nothing went wrong: it is the nature of the activity. In that situation only your own accident or travel cover pays, provided you declared the activity in advance. The provider's liability insurance is no substitute for your own cover, but a supplement that only comes into play where there is fault.

Abroad, getting home is the big item

The well-known jump sites are often far from the Netherlands and sometimes far from a hospital. With back or neck injuries, ordinary air travel is not an option and transport with an escort or on a stretcher is needed. Call the emergency assistance centre before you arrange anything: transport you book yourself without permission is regularly not paid for, even where the costs turn out afterwards to have been reasonable.

What certainly falls outside the cover

Excluded are: jumping with a provider without the required licence or inspection, jumps from bridges, viaducts or buildings outside an organised activity, jumping under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and jumping against medical advice. Heart, eye, neck or back conditions and pregnancy are on the list of contraindications with virtually every provider; if you jump all the same, Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code comes into play.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Once or more often. One booked jump is insured differently from repeated participation during the year.
  • Type of installation. A fixed tower, a mobile crane or a bridge are not assessed in the same way by every insurer.
  • Country of the jump. The distance to a hospital and the costs of adapted transport to the Netherlands count heavily.
  • Sum insured for disability. Permanent consequences for the eyes, neck or back determine the size of the payout with this activity.
  • Age and health. Acceptance is linked to age and to conditions that appear on the list of contraindications.
  • Other activities on the same trip. Anyone combining several risk sports gets one assessment of the whole rather than one per activity.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Can bungee jumping be insured?

Usually yes, as a separate extension or through cover for special sports, provided you declare it in advance. Not every insurer accepts it. A few exclude the activity altogether. Ask for confirmation in writing and make sure that both medical expenses and permanent disability are included, because those two do not always go together in the conditions.

The provider says it is insured. Is that enough?

No. Its policy covers damage for which it is liable. If you are injured without any mistake having been made, you never reach that cover. You would also have to prove the liability, in the country where you jumped and under the law applying there. Your own cover only asks whether the activity was declared.

Do I have to declare it if it is part of a booked outing?

Yes. Whether the jump is part of a group trip, a stag party or a company outing, your policy looks at the activity and not at the occasion. A single jump also falls under the exclusion for special sports. Declare it before departure; reporting afterwards no longer helps once something has happened.

Are there medical restrictions?

Providers apply contraindications for, among other things, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, eye conditions, neck and back complaints, epilepsy and pregnancy. If you jump despite such advice, the insurer can rely on serious fault within the meaning of Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code. If in doubt, obtain a statement from your doctor in advance and keep it with your travel documents.
