Insuring a Breitling

A Breitling goes into the water, into the air and into the gym — and those are precisely the activities that appear in the small print of the policy.

In brief

Breitling watches are rarely kept in a safe. They are worn while diving, sailing, doing winter sports and on long flights, and that is exactly where valuables insurance differs from a home contents policy: it looks at the activity during which the damage arose, not only at the place.

The two questions that always come back after a loss are: what were you doing at the time, and when was the watch last checked? Water damage after an expired pressure test and damage during sport are the two most common refusals with this type of watch. Both can be arranged in advance by naming the activity on the application.

We record the sports and travel you actually undertake in the application, so that the insurer cannot go back on it when a loss occurs. See also insuring a watch for the general structure of the cover.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Water resistance is maintenance, not a loss event

A diving watch keeps water out as long as the gaskets and the crown are in order. If moisture gets in because the periodic pressure check expired years ago, then in the insurer's view that is not a sudden event but deferred maintenance. That falls under the exclusion for wear and tear and gradual effects. Keep the service receipts: they make the difference between a covered leak and a refused claim.

Sport and diving appear in the wearing conditions

Many policies exclude damage arising during diving, contact sport, competitive sport or motorised speed sport. If you do wear the watch while doing those, that activity must be declared on the application and appear on the policy schedule. If you do not, the duty of disclosure under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code plays a part when a loss occurs and the insurer may reduce or refuse payment.

While travelling, the watch belongs in hand luggage

Valuables in hold luggage are excluded on almost every policy, including travel insurance. If the watch disappears from a checked suitcase, there is usually no cover, whatever the valued amount. The same applies to a watch left behind in a hotel room without the room safe being used, if your policy has a safe clause that also applies away from home. Read that clause before you leave.

The strap and the clasp determine the risk of loss

With sports watches, loss more often arises from a failed folding clasp or a worn rubber strap than from theft. A valuables policy covers the loss of the watch that follows, but not the replacement of the strap itself: that is wear and tear. Have the clasp checked at the regular service and report any repair or replacement of parts if it changes the valued amount.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Valued amount per watch — Each watch is declared separately; the valuation amount is the basis of calculation.
  • Sports you declare — Diving, sailing, winter sports and motorsport weigh more heavily than daily wear alone.
  • Travel habits and territory — Wearing it worldwide costs more than cover limited to Europe.
  • Where it is kept between wearings — An approved safe at home lowers the premium; a bedroom drawer does not.
  • Maintenance and service history — Demonstrable periodic maintenance limits argument about water damage and wear.
  • Excess per event — A higher excess per claim brings the premium down noticeably.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

Is my Breitling covered while diving?

Only if diving was declared on the application and appears on the policy schedule. As standard, many valuables policies exclude damage during diving and competitive sport. Declare the activity in advance; that is simpler than explaining afterwards why the watch was at fifteen metres. We include this in the application.

The watch leaked after a service. Who pays for that?

If the leak can be traced to an error during the service, that is a matter between you and the repairer, not with your insurer. If the moisture got in because the pressure check had expired, the exclusion for wear and tear and deferred maintenance applies. So always keep the receipts for maintenance carried out.

Do I have to declare the watch separately?

Yes. With valuables, each item is declared individually, with make, model, serial number and a valuation. A lumped-together entry without a specification leads to argument after a theft about exactly what has gone. With an item list and photographs the extent of the loss is established in advance and notification goes considerably faster.

Am I covered if the watch disappears from my checked suitcase?

Usually not. Valuables in hold luggage are excluded on almost every policy, and travel insurance does not take that risk on either. Wear the watch or keep it in your hand luggage. If it disappears from a hotel room, check whether your policy requires the room safe to be used.
