Makes · compared independently · advice from Finass
A car make is not a separate form of insurance: what the make really changes is parts prices, delivery times and the question of who may repair the vehicle after a loss.

There is no policy that applies to one make alone. The forms of cover are the same everywhere: third-party liability under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM), possibly extended with third-party, fire and theft or comprehensive cover. What does differ by make is how that works out when you claim. A make with a closed dealer network, brand-specific diagnostic equipment and parts coming from a single factory produces a different repair process from a make whose parts are widely available.
Insurers also look not at the make but at the exact model designation. Two cars of the same make can fall into completely different classes through power, specification and weight. The classification follows from the registration details, not from the badge on the grille. If the specification on your policy schedule does not match the registration, that is an incorrect declaration within the meaning of Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code.
The make pages set out, for each make, the points to note for private car insurance. If you drive a van of the same make, additional rules apply on fitting-out and load; see van insurance by make and, for business use, business cover by make.
The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
Insurers classify vehicles on the basis of registration details: power, mass, year of manufacture and specification. Within a single make those vary widely. An entry-level model and a top specification fall into different classes and do not pay the same premium. Give the full specification, therefore, and check it on the policy schedule. A discrepancy looks harmless, but it gives the insurer grounds to rely on Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code when you claim.
For makes whose parts run solely through their own network, a small loss is more expensive to repair and the vehicle takes longer to get back on the road. That cuts both ways: a higher own-damage premium and a greater interest in a good arrangement for replacement transport. Check how many days your policy allows and whether that period is extended when a part turns out to be unavailable.
Many policies leave the insurer free to repair with equivalent, non-original parts or with used parts. On a young vehicle under manufacturer's warranty or on a leased car, that can conflict with the importer's requirements. If you want certainty that brand parts will be used, that must appear in the conditions. A verbal assurance from a repairer does not bind the insurer.
With parallel imports, details the insurer needs are sometimes missing, or the specification differs from what was marketed in the Netherlands. That makes valuation more difficult, and with it the settlement of a total loss. In such a case, have the value fixed in advance and report that the vehicle is an import. Arguing afterwards about the market value of a specification never sold here rarely goes in your favour.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
The questions we are asked most often about this.
No. The forms of cover are independent of make: third-party liability, third-party, fire and theft, and comprehensive. The make plays a part in calculating the premium and in the claims process, not in the type of policy. The make pages exist because the points to note differ by make, for example in parts supply, repair network and the specifications brought to market here.
Have it corrected. The specification determines power, weight and value, and therefore the classification. If the policy schedule differs, there is an incorrect declaration and the insurer may adjust the payout to what it would have insured on correct information. A correction takes a phone call; putting it right afterwards does not.
If the conditions allow it, yes. Many policies speak of equivalent parts, which leaves room for imitation or used parts. On a young vehicle or a leased car that can conflict with warranty conditions. If you want repair with brand parts, choose a policy that states this expressly and record it before the repair.
The cover is the same, but valuation is more difficult. If details are missing or the specification was never supplied here, the market value on a total loss is open to argument. Report at the outset, therefore, that the vehicle is an import, and consider a valuation, so that the sum insured is fixed before there is a loss rather than after.
