This product group turns on a single obligation: as an employer you continue to pay a sick employee's wages for two years, whether or not there is any turnover to set against it. A sickness absence insurance absorbs those wage costs, a WIA or WGA solution deals with the period after that, and disability insurance does the same for the business owner personally.
Unlike a general insurance policy, the premium here is not a function of a sum insured but of your payroll, absence record and sector. Two firms with identical buildings can pay very different premiums because one does physically demanding work and the other does not.
We set this cover alongside what other insurers offer and look above all at the deferment period, the percentage insured and the occupational health services attached to the policy. For commercial property and liability cover, see non-life insurance.
We compare your disability insurance (AOV) across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.
Disability insurance (AOV)
Compare
Get coveredThe structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.
We compare Avéro Achmea with several insurers.
What is covered
| Situation | Basic | With extension |
|---|---|---|
| Permanent disability after an accident | Yes | Yes |
| Death caused by an accident | Yes | Yes |
| Incapacity for work due to illness | No | Provided that |
| Continued payment of wages during sickness absence | No | Provided that |
| Reintegration and guidance | Provided that | Yes |
| Complaints that already existed when the policy was taken out | No | No |
With accident and income cover, the definition of «accident» or «incapacity for work» determines what is paid out, together with the waiting period, the end age and the occupational profile. A condition that already existed or was known when the policy was taken out is usually excluded; non-disclosure can affect the payout (Articles 7:928 and 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code).

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
We look at the terms as well as the premium, and stay your point of contact when there is a claim.
We are not tied to one insurer and compare on the basis of an objective analysis of several companies.
You call or email someone who knows your file. No menu options, no changing call centres.
We cancel your old policy and align the start date, so you are never a day without cover.
We report the claim and monitor how it is handled. In urgent cases you can reach us on the emergency line.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
Sickness absence insurance (verzuimverzekering) only pays after a waiting period counted in working days. Short-term absence therefore always comes out of your own pocket. Choosing a longer deferment period cuts the premium considerably, but leaves you carrying flu absence in full. The trade-off is specific to your business: in a small team one long-term absence hits hard, while short-term absence is rare there. Work through both scenarios before you decide.
The Wet verbetering poortwachter (the Dutch Gatekeeper Improvement Act) sets out when you must have a problem analysis, an action plan and a reintegration report in place. Neglect that and the UWV (the Dutch employee insurance agency) can impose a wage sanction, and that extended period of continued pay is covered under virtually no policy. The rules on Article 7:611 of the Dutch Civil Code good employment practice also come into play here: offering suitable work is not an optional effort.
Sickness absence insurance stops when the duty to continue paying wages ends. If the employee moves on to WIA benefit, the drop in income is only cushioned by WIA top-up or WGA cover. If you carry the WGA risk yourself, the reintegration duty also stays with you for years. Assess these two products together; taken separately, a gap opens up.
Not covered are: wage sanctions imposed by the UWV, maternity leave taken under the Wazo (the Dutch work and care act), absence that already existed when the policy started, and workers who are not on your payroll. If you conceal current absence when applying, the duty of disclosure under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code applies and the insurer can reduce the payout under Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code.
This is what people ask us most.
No. Sickness absence insurance reimburses your employees' wage costs. If you are a director and majority shareholder or self-employed, disability insurance is the right product, with its own waiting period, final age and occupational definition. These are two separate policies that run alongside each other, and we compare them separately too.
That extra period of continued pay is almost always at your own expense. A sanction follows from insufficient reintegration effort and is therefore not an unforeseen event. Make sure the steps set out in the Wet verbetering poortwachter are taken on time and can be evidenced. A policy with case management helps, but does not take the duty off your hands.
No, only employees on your own payroll are insured. For hired-in workers, continued pay runs through the agency or the contractor themselves. It is still sensible to check that those parties have arranged their own cover, because otherwise absence on a long-running assignment will affect your planning all the same.
No. We are not tied to any one company and set this offer alongside that of other income protection insurers. In this product group it is not only the premium that differs, but above all the occupational health services and each provider's assessment approach. If another party turns out to suit your absence profile better, that is what we will advise.
