A camper van covers a lot of miles in a few weeks, often far from home, so the policy stands or falls by its territorial limits and the assistance you get on the road.

The ASR camper van insurance applies within defined territorial limits. Which countries are included is shown on the green card: the countries that are not crossed out are insured. If you drive on to a destination outside that list, you need an extension or a local frontier insurance beforehand. A journey that leaves the covered area halfway leaves you without cover at the moment you need it most.
What happens after a breakdown or an accident abroad is a second point. Towing and repatriation costs, transport of the occupants home, replacement accommodation or a replacement camper van are not automatically part of own-damage cover; these are separate modules or parts of an assistance cover. Without that module you pay for the repatriation of a broken-down vehicle yourself.
The value on which a claim is settled follows a sliding arrangement for camper vans that switches to market value after a time. Ask when that switch takes place. If the vehicle stands idle in winter, suspending the registration can be worthwhile; the obligation under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM) then lapses, but so does cover for use on the road. See also the Bewust motorhome insurance.
The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.
Third-party liability insurance is required by law and covers damage you cause to others with your motorhome, not damage to your own motorhome.
Alongside third-party liability cover, protection against damage to your own car from external causes you cannot prevent.
The most complete cover, including for damage you cause yourself, theft and total loss. We compare ASR's comprehensive version with the market.

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
The green card is not a formality but the record of where you are insured to drive. Countries that are crossed out fall outside the cover, even if you are only driving through. If you want to travel further than the standard area, apply for an extension in advance or buy local cover at the border. Check the year in which the card was issued before you leave.
If the camper van is left standing abroad, the question is who pays for the towing, the inspection, the storage and the return journey, and whether the occupants are taken home. Some policies also arrange a night's accommodation or a replacement vehicle. These items sit in a separate assistance module with its own conditions on vehicle age and on whether breakdowns count alongside accidental damage.
Camper vans are usually insured under an arrangement based on the purchase price for the first few years, which then moves step by step to market value. That switching point determines what you are left with in the event of a total loss. Ask about it and record whether accessories, fitting-out and any body added later are included in that amount. For an imported or converted camper van, a valuation is often the better route.
Outside the cover: travel to countries crossed out on the green card; hire of the camper van, including through a sharing platform; permanent occupation or use as living space; breakdowns and faults resulting from deferred maintenance; damage arising because you have loaded the vehicle above the maximum permitted weight; and the costs of a holiday cut short, such as booked crossings and campsite pitches.
Replacement transport after a claim Stay mobile with replacement transport.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
The questions we are asked most often about this.
Only in the countries that are not crossed out on the green card. For destinations beyond those, arrange an extension in advance, or take out local insurance at the border. Do not simply drive on and hope for the best: a country outside the area means no cover, not even where you are only driving through.
That depends on the module chosen. It usually covers towing to a garage, transport of the occupants, storage and returning the camper van to the Netherlands if repair on the spot is not possible. Note the conditions on the age of the vehicle and on whether breakdowns without a collision also count.
For a camper van with a registration number, you can. The obligation under Article 2 WAM then lapses, but so does cover for use on the road. If you want fire, theft and storm damage in storage to continue, that has to be agreed expressly. Arrange it before you suspend the registration, not afterwards.
That differs from policy to policy. For the first few years the purchase price is used, after which the arrangement moves step by step to market value. That switching point determines what you are left with in the event of a total loss and is therefore one of the most important points of comparison between providers. Also ask whether fitting-out and accessories are included in the sum insured.
