Business classic car insurance through a.s.r.
If a classic car is registered in your company's name, it is not the vehicle that changes but the circle of people who drive it and the place where it is kept. On those two points a business classic car policy differs.

In brief
As an independent intermediary we set the offerings of more than thirty companies side by side. We approach a.s.r. among others when a classic car runs alongside a company's other business policies, so that the vehicles, the liability and the building sit with one company. Which insurer it ends up being follows from the cover you need and the conditions, not from the name. The wider business range from this company can be found under the business general insurance from a.s.r.
The first difference from a private classic car policy lies in the group of drivers. Privately that is often limited to the policyholder and their partner, with a minimum age. In a business setting employees also drive, a mechanic collects the car, or a business contact is allowed behind the wheel. Every journey by someone outside the circle described means the own-damage loss stays with you. The third-party liability cover continues, because Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM) protects the injured party, but the insurer can recover the amount paid from a driver who was not authorised.
The second difference lies in where the car is kept. A classic car in your own business unit does not fall under the business contents or stock insurance for those premises: motor vehicles are excluded there as standard. The own-damage cover on the vehicle is therefore the only place where fire or theft damage can land, and that cover sets requirements for storage. If you also drive the classic car on location for clients or events, start with business classic car insurance; if it is registered only in the company's name, the better fit is a classic car in the company's name the right starting point.

What to look out for
Four subjects that lead to argument when a classic car is registered in the company's name.
Who may drive is stated on the policy schedule
Make the description match practice: the director only, or employees and their partners as well. The wider the circle, the higher the premium, but a description that is too narrow costs you the whole own-damage cover at the moment it goes wrong. If your staff change, check the clause at renewal rather than after a loss.
A valuation has a shelf life
The value of a classic car is recorded in a a valuation report from an expert. As long as that report falls within the period of validity named in the clause, the value is fixed and there is no further argument about the amount. If the report expires, you fall back on market value and, under Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code you may not end up better off than you were before. Put the revaluation in your diary.
Storage, maintenance and work on the car
Almost every classic car policy requires storage in a locked, sound space and names the address. If the car is regularly kept elsewhere, report it. If you work on the car yourself, watch out for hot work: welding and grinding in the same space can fall under a separate clause on the buildings and contents policy, with requirements for extinguishers and a fire watch afterwards.
Mileage and the nature of the journeys
The low premium of a classic car policy hangs on a limited annual mileage and on use that is not daily. Business journeys, client visits and commuting all count towards that meter. Still excluded are hire, carrying people or goods for payment, driving tuition and taking part in speed events; a different capacity is needed for those.
What does your premium depend on?
- Agreed value — the basis for the own-damage premium
- Circle of drivers and ages — the board only or employees as well
- Annual mileage — recorded as a clause on the policy
- Storage address and security — locked space, alarm, no-trace entry
- Cover chosen — third-party liability, third-party liability plus third-party, fire and theft, or comprehensive
- The company's claims history — applies to the whole fleet relationship
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.
What is covered
| Situation | Third-party liability | Comprehensive |
|---|---|---|
| Your director runs the classic car into the back of someone else's car and damages it | Yes | Yes |
| A fire in the shed named on the policy as the storage address, in which the classic car is lost | No | Yes |
| Hail damage to the bodywork while the car stands outside at a classic car show | No | Yes |
| Injury to your employee, who caused the collision himself as the driver | No | No |
| Theft while the valuation report expired two years ago | No | Provided that |
| Damage during a journey for which you hire the classic car out as a wedding car for payment | No | No |
The third-party liability cover always protects the other party; whether your own car is paid for depends on the own-damage option chosen and the clauses on the policy schedule.
Frequently asked questions
The questions we are asked most often about this.
Can a classic car registered to a bv go on a classic car policy?
It can, provided the insurer accepts business ownership and the circle of drivers is described. The policyholder is then the company and not a private individual. Bear in mind that clauses on use, such as a second vehicle in the household, are worded differently in a business version; do not therefore submit the application on a private form.
Does the mileage limit apply to business journeys as well?
Yes. The clause looks at the total number of miles driven per year and draws no distinction between a trip to a client and a Sunday tour. If you expect more miles because the car is used more often, have the banding adjusted. Exceeding it can lead to a reduced payment after a loss because a clause has not been complied with.
Is the car insured while it stands in my business unit?
Only through the own-damage cover on the vehicle itself. Business contents or stock insurance for the premises excludes motor vehicles, and the buildings insurance covers the building and not its contents. Check therefore that your classic car policy covers fire and theft at the storage address you have declared, and that the security requirements in the clause have actually been carried out.
What if an employee has an accident in the classic car?
The third-party liability cover deals with the other party's loss. Injury to your own employee as the driver does not fall under it and touches your duty of care under Article 7:658 of the Dutch Civil Code. There is separate traffic cover for employers for that; the difference between those versions is set out under WEGAS and WEGAM.
