In brief

Finass acts as a broker for a.s.r.'s personal general insurance range. We are not tied to this company; we compare several insurers objectively and the outcome follows from the cover you need. If you drive electric or have a second vehicle, also look at electric car insurance and to classic car insurance, where the value is set on an entirely different basis.

Where an own-damage claim comes unstuck is the value. As long as the replacement value as new or the depreciation rule applies, the settlement is predictable. After that the market valueapplies: what your car was worth immediately before the accident, as assessed by a loss adjuster. Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code prohibits a payout from leaving you clearly better off, so you will get no more than that value, even if you paid more for the car. On a total loss the insurer also deducts the salvage value of the wreck, unless you hand the wreck over.

The second point is accessories and modifications. An audio system, towbar, roof rack, charging cable, wrap or a built-in navigation system is usually included as standard up to a limited amount. Anything above that you have to declare and have recorded, with receipts. The same applies to tuning and engine modifications: undeclared, they are almost always excluded, and not just for the part itself but for the whole claim in which the modification plays a part.

This page deals with one situation. The full overview is on Compare car insurance.

What to look out for

Four things that determine the amount you are paid.

Theft: requirements for security and keys

After a theft the insurer checks whether the car met the prescribed security class and whether all keys can be handed in. If a key is missing or the car was left open, the result is often no payout. Theft of separate parts, such as wheels or a catalytic converter, does not always fall under the same section as theft of the car itself.

What is never covered

Excluded are wear, mechanical failure and construction faults, damage from the wrong fuel or a flat battery, and loss of value after a properly carried out repair. Load and personal belongings in the car likewise fall outside the car policy; they belong on home contents or travel insurance.

Mileage and history

An incorrect odometer reading, an undeclared import history or a concealed earlier total loss goes to the heart of the duty of disclosure under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code. If that only comes to light during claims handling, the insurer may, under Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code reduce or entirely refuse the payout. With a car with a foreign past it pays to sort this out in advance; see insuring a car with a foreign registration number.

Assistance and a replacement vehicle

Breakdown assistance, towing costs and a replacement car are not included as standard. Assistance is often arranged for an accident but not for a breakdown , or only beyond a certain distance from home. Anyone who depends on the car for commuting should choose that module deliberately.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Market value and list price — together they set the own-damage rate
  • Accessories covered — above the standard amount it counts
  • Claims history — registered no-claims years and recent claims
  • Security level — an alarm or tracking system on theft-prone models
  • Use — private, commuting or business use as well
  • Modules chosen — breakdown assistance, a replacement vehicle and occupants' cover

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

How is the market value determined?

A loss adjuster establishes what your car was worth immediately before the damage, based on make, specification, year of manufacture, mileage, condition and the current market. If you disagree with that assessment, you have the right to appoint your own expert; those costs are usually covered within limits. If a difference remains, a third, binding expert is appointed.

My car has been declared a total loss. What now?

With a technical total loss, repair is impossible; with an economic total loss, the repair costs exceed the difference between the market value and the salvage value. You receive the market value, less the salvage value if you keep the wreck. The registration must be discharged and the insurance ends on the date of deregistration. Replacement value as new and depreciation rules take precedence over this.

Are my belongings in the car insured?

Usually not. A laptop, tools or luggage in the car fall outside the car policy. Home contents insurance sometimes covers theft from a locked car, often only after forced entry and up to a low amount, and travel insurance covers luggage on its own conditions. Do not count on car insurance to solve this.

Does anything change if I start using the car for work?

Yes. Regular business use, visiting customers or carrying goods is different from what a private policy is intended for and must be declared. If you drive as a self-employed professional, a commercial version is often more suitable; what differs is set out on the page about commercial car insurance through a.s.r..
