In brief

A cyber incident in a household is rarely just a question of money. A hijacked email account opens the way to every other account linked to it, ransomware on a home computer makes years of photo archives unreachable, and stolen identity details surface months later with debt collectors and subscriptions you never took out. The cyber insurance for private individuals through Ansvar Idea is set up for that whole process: reporting, getting help, restoring and having the traces removed.

The core is therefore not a payout but access to specialists. An IT helpdesk that cleans devices and restores accounts, support in reversing identity fraud, and legal help when you are wrongly held responsible for something done in your name. For a family with children, this is extended with guidance on online bullying, extortion using images, and having data removed.

We set this approach alongside the cyber insurance for private individuals through Turien & Co, which places more emphasis on financial loss when buying and paying online. Which of the two suits you depends on where your risk lies.

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

The first 48 hours determine the extent of the loss

When an account is taken over, speed matters: change passwords and recovery email addresses, restore two-factor authentication, warn the bank and disconnect devices. Cover with a reporting line you can reach immediately stops you trying things yourself and wiping evidence in the process. Keep screenshots and original emails; you will need them later for the police report and to show that the actions were not yours.

Identity fraud runs on for months

If your details have been used to take out subscriptions, loans or orders in your name, the incident is not over once you have the account back. Clearing up means reporting to the police, corresponding with debt collectors, having registrations corrected and sometimes going to court. This policy pays the costs of that help. It is a service, not compensation for what the fraudster spent.

Family members, children and shared devices

A household shares a network, tablets and streaming accounts. Cover therefore usually applies to everyone living at the address, which means that an incident entering through a child's phone also falls under the policy. Do check the age limit for children studying away from home; each provider describes it differently. So give full details of the composition of your household.

What is not covered

Outside the cover are losses on crypto and investment platforms and loss arising from your own investment decision; incidents connected with a business or self-employed activity run from home; damage caused because you left known security updates uninstalled for a long time or deliberately switched security off; and incidents caused by a member of the household. Replacing hardware is usually excluded as well; that belongs on the home contents insurance (inboedelverzekering).

Retroactive cover (prior risk)

Defence & legal costs

What does your premium depend on?

  • Composition of the household — Single person or family with children; the number of users determines the number of ways in.
  • Cover components chosen — Assistance and recovery only, or also identity restoration, legal assistance and online reputation.
  • Maximum per event and per year — The upper limit for the costs of specialists and recovery work.
  • Number and type of devices — Computers, tablets, phones and smart equipment in the home together make up the attack surface.
  • Security level — Two-factor authentication, automatic updates and back-ups count towards acceptance and the rate.
  • Excess per incident — With service-based cover this is often a fixed amount per report.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

What exactly does this insurance do if I have been hacked?

You report the incident and are assigned a specialist who checks devices, removes malware, restores accounts and advises which bodies you need to warn. The costs of that investigation and recovery fall under the cover. If identity fraud turns out to be involved, the process continues with correction of registrations and legal support.

Do I have to report it to the police?

Yes, for almost all cyber incidents a police report is a condition for further handling, and it is also practically indispensable when contesting claims made in your name. Also report the incident to the insurer as soon as possible; Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires you to report in good time and to cooperate with the investigation.

Are my photos and files insured if ransomware strikes?

The costs of recovery attempts and of cleaning systems fall under the cover, but the files themselves are not an insurable object. Without a back-up, loss is final. Paying a ransom is generally not reimbursed. An external or cloud back-up outside the infected network is therefore the only real protection.

Does the policy help with online bullying or extortion of my child?

Where the module for online reputation and personal protection is included, help is part of it: mediation to have images removed, contact with platforms and legal support. It is an extension and not a standard component. We explain per provider exactly what that module covers and up to what maximum.
