In brief

Finass places business through AnsvarIdea among others. We are not tied to this insurer: we compare several insurers objectively and use AnsvarIdea where its offering suits what you need. The range runs from the car insurance and the motorhome insurance to the home contents insurance, the travel insurance and the personal accident insurance.

Placing several policies with one insurer mainly gains you clarity when you claim. After a break-in in which the car on the drive is also damaged, or a cycling accident involving both injury and property damage, there is no need to work out first which insurer must respond. If everything is spread around, concurrent insurance comes into play: insurers point to each other's policy and settlement is delayed. Double cover does not, incidentally, produce a double payout, because Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code does not allow you to be better off as a result of a loss.

When bundling, do watch the substantive differences. Personal liability insurance covers damage that you or your family members cause to others, but not damage arising from a profession or business, not damage to items in your keeping (the care, custody and control exclusion) and not damage involving a motor vehicle, for which Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM) prescribes its own compulsory insurance. The combination of liability and legal expenses cover makes those two sides fit together: one pays the other party's loss, the other recovers your loss from a third party.

This page deals with one situation. The full overview is on Compare car insurance.

What to look out for

Four points to consider when putting together a personal package.

Liability: three standard exclusions

Virtually every personal liability policy contains the same restrictions: intent (Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code), damage arising from profession or business, and damage to items you have in your care, such as a borrowed trailer or a rented holiday home. Damage involving a motor vehicle or vessel is also excluded.

Legal expenses cover has a waiting period

Legal expenses insurance does not apply to disputes that were already running or foreseeable when you took out the policy, and each module has a waiting period of a few months, for example for employment and housing disputes. Traffic matters are often covered immediately. Anyone who can see a dispute coming is too late.

Contents: valuables and items away from home

Jewellery, audiovisual equipment and collections are covered up to a sub-limit; above that you must declare them separately. Items outside the home, in the car or while travelling fall under different conditions and sometimes under a different policy. Check where the limit lies before you make an expensive purchase.

Duty to notify changes

Moving house, moving in with a partner, letting a property or starting a business at home changes the risk. Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code requires a full statement when you apply, and the policy conditions generally require changes in risk to be notified afterwards. When you claim, an insurer checks whether the situation still matched what was disclosed.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Household composition — single or family determines the group of insured persons
  • Number of policies — bundling can produce a package discount
  • Living situation — owned or rented, and the type of home
  • Sums insured — contents value and the liability sum chosen
  • Modules chosen — travel, accident, legal expenses or cyber cover
  • Excess — can be set separately for each policy

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

Is a package always cheaper?

Not necessarily. A package discount often does not outweigh a sharper rate from a specialist provider on one element. The real benefit of bundling is administrative: one contact, one claim notification and less chance of insurers pointing at each other. We work out both options and show you the difference.

What if a loss falls under two policies?

The rules on overlapping cover then apply. Most conditions state that the policy steps back if the loss is covered elsewhere. There is no double payout; Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code prohibits you from being better off. So report the loss to one insurer and mention that there may be a second policy, so that they can settle it between themselves.

Does the liability insurance also cover my pet?

Yes. As the keeper you are liable under Article 6:179 of the Dutch Civil Code for damage your animal causes, even without fault on your part, and personal liability insurance covers that. Damage to yourself or to your own property is not covered, and for an animal kept for business purposes you need business cover.

Do I need cyber insurance as a private individual?

For anyone who banks and shops online and manages many accounts, it can be worthwhile: the cover focuses on fraud, identity theft and help with recovery after a hack. First check what your bank and your legal expenses insurance already do, to avoid double cover. You can find this insurer's version under cyber insurance for private individuals.
