In brief

You insure a Fiesta, Focus or Puma on ordinary car insurance. A Transit or Transit Custom on a commercial registration belongs on a van insurance, and where that van is driven for your business, on a commercial van policy. That distinction is not an administrative formality: it determines the basis of the premium, the underwriting and whether damage to loads and liability during work come into the picture at all.

On commercial vehicles the biggest misunderstanding concerns the contents. Own-damage cover insures the vehicle, not what is in it. Tools, machines, stock and third parties' goods fall outside it and call for separate business contents or goods cover. If there is a break-in, own-damage cover pays for the break-in damage to the door or lock; the toolbox that has disappeared it does not.

Permanent fitting-out also only counts if you declare it. Racking, a bulkhead, load floor, roof rack, towbar and company signwriting form a substantial share of the value on a fitted-out van. If they are not on the policy, the insurer settles a total loss on a bare van. The same rule applies to a Ranger with a hardtop or load bed fitting.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

The registration and the use determine the type of policy

A yellow registration plate and private use belong on car insurance. A commercial registration and business use on a van policy. If you drive for business on a private policy, the insurer can rely after a claim on the duty of disclosure in Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code and reduce the payment under Article 7:930 DCC. If your use changes, for instance because you start driving as a self-employed professional (zzp'er), report it during the term.

Tools and load in the van

Own-damage cover covers the van and not the contents. Machines, hand tools, measuring equipment and materials for the customer are only insured through separate business contents or tool cover, usually with requirements as to storage and as to how long the van may be left unattended. Goods you carry for a client fall in turn under own-account carriage or under a goods in transit cover. Take that into account in your review before something goes wrong.

Declaring fitting-out, signwriting and bodywork

A fitted-out Transit is worth more than an empty one. Racking, a bulkhead, load floor, refrigeration, towbar, roof rack and your company signwriting therefore belong separately on the policy, with an invoice or a statement of the installation costs. If that declaration is missing, a total loss or theft is settled on the standard version. The same applies to repairs after a claim: signwriting that has to be reapplied is only paid for if it is insured.

What is not covered

Outside the cover remain: tools, stock and third parties' goods under own-damage cover; undeclared fitting-out and signwriting; damage from overloading or badly secured loads; damage during hire or lending to third parties without permission; wear to the clutch, tyres and brakes; and business use concealed on a private policy. Driving without a valid licence or under the influence excludes all cover.

Repairs and parts

Parts are widely available, with short repair times as a result.

Acceptance differs per insurer

Not every company applies the same policy for this make. With unusual versions, the question is not what it costs but who will accept it.

Car insurance

What does your premium depend on?

  • Type of registration and weight. A yellow or commercial registration and the mass of the vehicle determine the rating group and the underwriting.
  • Use of the vehicle. Private use, commuting, business carriage or delivery each produce a different risk profile.
  • Value including fitting-out. The list price plus declared bodywork, racking, refrigeration and signwriting.
  • No-claims years and drivers. The policyholder's step and whether several employees drive the van.
  • Annual mileage. A van driving between projects every day covers many times the mileage of a family car.
  • Storage and security. Overnight parking on a locked site and an approved alarm count, certainly on vans.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Which policy suits a Ford Transit?

A commercial registration goes with van insurance. If the van is driven for your business, a commercial van policy is the right form. It takes account of business use, several drivers and fitting-out. Private car insurance only fits a van used purely privately, and even then not every insurer makes that form available.

Are my tools in the van covered?

Not under the own-damage cover. That insures the vehicle itself, including break-in damage to locks and doors, but not the contents. For tools and materials you take out separate business contents cover. It almost always contains conditions about storage in a locked box, about overnight parking and about whether the van may be left unattended on the street.

Does company signwriting count in a total loss?

Only if you have declared it. Lettering, film and advertising print are not factory specification and are therefore not automatically in the sum insured. Provide the cost of applying it with an invoice, and it can be included on repair or in a total loss. The same applies to racking, a load floor and a bulkhead.

May I drive privately on a commercial registration?

In tax terms and in insurance terms those are two different questions. For the policy, what counts is the use you declared. If you drive privately on a regular basis while the policy assumes business carriage, or the other way round, the actual risk differs from the risk declared. Declare the actual use, because the insurer checks it afterwards against Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code.
