Insuring a Skoda

With a Skoda the key question is not whether you can insure the car, but at what point comprehensive cover stops being worthwhile and third-party, fire and theft becomes enough.

In brief

The range runs from a compact city car to a spacious family car with seven seats and a fully electric version. What those models share is technology and parts with the rest of the VW group. On the claims side that means parts are widely available, independent repairers can handle them too, and the time a repair takes stays limited. That keeps the cost of claims down and works through into the own-damage rate.

Precisely because the purchase price is below that of technically related models, the tipping point comes sooner. At some stage the premium for comprehensive cover plus the excess no longer measures up to what you would be paid if the car were written off. Third-party, fire and theft is then the wiser choice: theft, fire, storm and glass damage remain covered, damage you cause yourself does not. Work that out with the market value in front of you, not with the purchase price at the time.

Also note the a replacement-value-as-new or purchase-value arrangement in the first few years. That applies for a limited period and usually only to the first owner. After that, market value applies. For a make in a comparable price segment, see Dacia; for a make where hybrid technology is the deciding factor, Toyota.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Shared technology makes repair simpler

Because the models share their platform, engines and body parts with other makes in the same group, parts are readily available and the knowledge is widespread. A claim therefore does not have to go to a brand dealer. An independent repairer can usually handle it. That shortens repair times and limits costs. For you the gain is mainly practical: fewer days of replacement transport and less chance of a car waiting weeks for a part.

The tipping point from comprehensive to third-party, fire and theft

Comprehensive cover is worthwhile as long as a write-off is an amount you would not want to bear yourself. As the market value falls, the moment approaches when the annual premium plus the excess starts to bear comparison with the maximum payment. Third-party, fire and theft then keeps theft, fire, storm, hail, glass damage and collision with an animal covered, but not your own error at the wheel. Assess this each year at renewal, not once when you buy the car.

The replacement value as new arrangement and its term

With a newly bought car, many policies have an arrangement that pays for an initial period on the basis of the replacement value as new or the purchase price instead of market value. That arrangement runs for a set term, almost always applies only to the first owner and does not apply to a second-hand purchase. Check how long your term runs. After that the basis of settlement shifts silently to market value and the choice of cover has to be reconsidered.

What is not covered

Outside the cover: wear, maintenance and defects that arise from within, such as timing belt or clutch damage; engine damage caused by misfuelling or by deferred maintenance; an undeclared towbar, roof box, bike rack or built-in equipment; goods and luggage in the boot; hire or use through a car-sharing platform; and damage caused by intent or recklessness, as referred to in Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code.

Repairs and parts

Parts shared with the VW group keep repair times and costs down.

Acceptance differs per insurer

Not every company applies the same policy for this make. With unusual versions, the question is not what it costs but who will accept it.

Car insurance

What does your premium depend on?

  • Model and trim level. A compact city car, a family car, an SUV or an RS version fall into different classes.
  • Market value or list price. The basis for calculation shifts from list price to market value once the replacement value as new term ends.
  • No-claims years. The registered years without a paid claim determine your step and with it a large part of the premium.
  • Annual mileage and commuting distance. How much you drive and whether the car is used daily in rush-hour traffic.
  • Region and storage. The postcode where the car is kept at night and whether it stands in a garage, on a driveway or in the street.
  • Type of cover and excess. Third-party liability, third-party fire and theft or comprehensive cover, with an excess that often applies separately to glass damage.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

When do I move from comprehensive to third-party, fire and theft?

As soon as the market value has fallen far enough for you to absorb a write-off yourself. Set the annual premium plus the excess against the maximum payment. If those come close together, comprehensive cover is no longer worthwhile. Third-party, fire and theft keeps theft, fire, storm and glass damage covered. Reassess this at every renewal, because the market value falls each year.

May I choose my own repairer?

You generally may, but many policies reward repair at an approved firm with a lower or waived excess and with replacement transport. If you choose your own repairer, the insurer may apply a higher excess or limit the payment to a standard amount. Because parts are widely available, the directed route rarely causes delay with this make.

Is a towbar or roof box covered?

A factory-fitted towbar is usually included in the value declared. Accessories fitted later, such as a roof box, bike rack, towbar or built-in equipment, must be declared separately, otherwise they are not covered if they are stolen or damaged. Remember too that damage to a coupled trailer itself is never covered by the motor policy; you need separate insurance for that.

Does the replacement value as new arrangement also apply to a used car?

Usually not. The arrangement is intended for the first owner of a factory-new car and runs for a limited term from first registration. If you buy a used example, market value applies, sometimes with a purchase price arrangement for a shorter period. Ask about this before you take out the policy, because it determines what you actually receive if the car is written off.
