Liability insurance for foundations and associations
An association has no staff but does have people doing work. It is precisely those volunteers who regularly fall between all the policies when there is a loss.

In brief
Foundations and associations are liable for damage during their activities: injury to visitors, damage to a hired venue and damage caused by volunteers.
Volunteers are not employees, but the organisation can still have a duty of care towards them. Many municipalities also have a collective volunteers' insurance; check what it covers before insuring the same risk twice.
This page deals with one part. The overview of all parts is on the main page on public and employers' liability.
What to look out for
Check the municipal volunteers' insurance
Almost every municipality has one. Know what it covers, so that you only insure what is genuinely missing.
Hired venues and equipment
Damage to a hired hall, marquee or sound system falls under care, custody and control and is excluded as standard.
Directors' and officers' liability separately
Board members of a foundation or association are personally liable for improper management. That is a different policy.
Report events separately
An annual party, tournament or market is a different risk from your regular activities. Report it or insure it separately.
What determines the premium
- Number of members or participants
- Nature of the activities
- Number of volunteers
- Your own location or a rented location
- Sum insured
This information is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
Frequently asked questions
Are our volunteers insured?
Often in part, through the municipal volunteers' insurance. Check what it covers and top it up with liability cover of your own.
Is damage to a hired venue covered?
Not as standard. That falls under the care, custody and control exclusion; separate cover is needed for it.
Are our board members protected?
Not by this policy. Personal liability of board members calls for directors' and officers' liability insurance.
Do we have to insure our annual event separately?
Often yes. A large event has a different risk profile from regular activities; report it or take out an events policy.
What is covered and what is not
What is covered
| Situation | AVB | Directors' and officers' liability |
|---|---|---|
| A visitor trips over a cable during your annual fundraising day | Yes | No |
| A volunteer rides the foundation's cargo bike into a parked car | Yes | No |
| A volunteer falls off a ladder while putting up the lighting | Provided that | No |
| The board fails to collect subscriptions for years and suppliers go unpaid | No | Yes |
| The treasurer signs a lease the association cannot afford | No | Yes |
| A participant is injured during training without anyone being at fault | No | No |
If it is about damage to someone else, look at the AVB. If it is about an allegation against the board itself, look at directors' and officers' liability.
