Insuring a Toyota

In the Netherlands, Toyotas are mainly hybrids without a plug, and that brings two claims patterns you do not meet with an ordinary petrol car.

In brief

A full hybrid combines a combustion engine with a high-voltage battery that you do not charge yourself. For the policy that has a pleasant consequence: there is no charging facility at home for the insurer to ask about, and regenerative braking means brake components wear more slowly. The battery is simply part of the car and therefore covered when an insured event damages it. Loss of capacity through age is not. That is a warranty matter.

The second point is less pleasant. On hybrid models the catalytic converter is a popular target, because with this drivetrain the part stays in relatively good condition and contains precious metals. The theft takes little time and leaves cut wiring and damaged heat shields behind. Whether that is covered depends on whether your policy covers theft of parts, and that starts with third-party, fire and theft.

Third, the use. Hybrid Toyotas are widely used for taxi work and shared mobility. Paid passenger transport falls outside the ordinary private policy and calls for separate cover. If you drive a model from the sister brand in the higher segment, see Lexus; if you are looking at a make where the tipping point of comprehensive cover is the issue, see Skoda.

Toyota: what is covered?

The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.

Compulsory by law

Third-party liability insurance

Damage you cause to others with the vehicle. Not your own vehicle.

  • Damage to other vehicles
  • Injury to third parties
  • Damage to objects
Most chosen

Third-party liability + fire and theft

Also, damage to your own vehicle from external causes.

  • Theft and burglary
  • Fire, storm and hail
  • Windscreen damage
  • Collision with animals
For higher values

Comprehensive cover

Including damage to your own vehicle through your own fault.

  • Own fault and single-vehicle accident
  • Vandalism
  • Unknown party at fault
  • Total loss

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

The high-voltage battery on the policy

The traction battery of a hybrid is part of the vehicle, just like the engine. If it is damaged by a collision, fire or water, that falls under own-damage cover. You do not need separate battery insurance for it. Repairs to the high-voltage section, recognisable by the orange wiring, may only be carried out by a mechanic trained for it. After a collision in which the underside was struck, a check of the pack is a standard part of assessing the claim.

Catalytic converter theft and consequential damage

Cutting out a catalytic converter costs a thief little time and leaves you with more damage than the part alone: cut lambda sensor cables, damaged heat shields and a car that no longer runs. Theft of parts is covered from third-party, fire and theft upwards, provided you report it to the police and notify the claim as Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires. A protective plate or a marked catalytic converter helps; discuss with your insurer whether that has any effect on your excess.

Retained value and the choice for own-damage cover

Models from this make are known for a flat depreciation curve and for parts that are widely available. Own-damage cover therefore remains defensible for longer than with a car that falls in value more quickly, while repair costs stay manageable because independent repairers can handle them too. At each renewal, assess whether the market value still justifies paying for comprehensive cover, and take into account the excess you bear.

What is not covered

Outside the cover: loss of capacity and ageing of the hybrid battery; faults in the hybrid system or the electronics with no event from outside; the consequences of deferred maintenance or misfuelling; paid passenger transport, driving lessons and use through a car-sharing platform where this has not been agreed; an undeclared towbar, roof rack or built-in equipment; wear to tyres and brakes; and damage caused by intent or recklessness, as referred to in Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code.

Repairs and parts

Parts are readily available and repair costs are below the average for the premium segment.

Acceptance differs per insurer

Not every company applies the same policy for this make. With unusual versions, the question is not what it costs but who will accept it.

Car insurance

What does your premium depend on?

  • Model and drivetrain. From a compact city car to a large SUV, and whether it is a full hybrid or a plug-in.
  • Market or list value. The sum insured including options, and whether the replacement value as new term is still running.
  • No-claims years. The registered years without a paid claim determine your step on the bonus-malus scale.
  • Purpose of use. Private use, business use or transport for payment. The last of these calls for a different policy.
  • Storage and security. Where the car stands at night counts, partly because of theft of parts from under the vehicle.
  • Type of cover and excess. Third-party liability, third-party fire and theft or comprehensive cover; theft of parts is only covered from third-party, fire and theft upwards.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Is the hybrid battery covered?

Yes, as part of the car. If the battery is damaged by a collision, fire, theft or water, that falls under own-damage cover. Separate battery insurance is not needed. What is not included is a battery that delivers less capacity after some years; that is wear and is dealt with under the manufacturer's warranty on the hybrid system, not through the insurance.

What if my catalytic converter is stolen?

Theft of a part is covered from third-party, fire and theft upwards, including the consequential damage to cables and heat shields. Report it to the police and notify the insurer as soon as possible; Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires you to do so. With third-party liability cover you receive nothing. Repeated theft can lead to a security requirement or an adjustment of your excess.

May I use my Toyota as a taxi or a shared car?

Not on an ordinary private policy. Carrying passengers for payment, use for driving lessons and hire through a sharing platform are excluded as standard. If you want to do so, separate cover agreed in advance is needed. If you do not declare the use and damage occurs during a paid journey, the insurer can refuse payment.

Do I insure a plug-in hybrid differently from an ordinary hybrid?

Broadly speaking, no, but with a plug-in the charging facility is added. The insurer then asks where you charge and whether the installation was fitted by a recognised installer. A wallbox at the house falls under the buildings insurance (opstalverzekering), not under the motor policy. Declare the charging cable you carry as an accessory, or its theft will not be covered.
