Websites and registers you can use

There is a lot to find online about insurance, but not all of it is equally reliable or equally complete. This page describes which types of source exist and what you can and cannot use them for.

  • Several insurers compared objectively
  • 9.5 customer rating for a new policy
  • AFM licence 12016589

In brief

There are broadly three types of source. Official registers tell you something about the party you are dealing with: the licence register of the Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets shows whether an intermediary or insurer is authorised to advise and act as an intermediary, and the Chamber of Commerce trade register shows who is behind a business. Industry sources give product information, such as the standardised insurance cards (verzekeringskaarten). Commercial comparison sites show prices, but rarely the exclusions behind them.

A price on a comparison site is an indication based on the details you entered yourself. As soon as the insurer assesses the risk, the premium can differ or a clause can be added. Those sites also compare mainly on premium and excess, and not on the points that make the difference when you claim: the sub-limit for valuables, the care, custody and control exclusion, whether replacement value as new or market value is paid and whether you may choose your own repairer. So always compare the conditions, not just the amount.

To arrange matters themselves you use the service pages on this site: the application form, notifying a change and report a claim. Our licence, remuneration and complaints route are set out in the service guide; how we handle your data is set out in the privacy policy.

This page deals with one situation. The full overview is on Compare personal liability insurance (AVP).

What to look out for online

Four checks that prevent you relying on the wrong information.

Check the licence

Anyone who advises on or acts as an intermediary for insurance in the Netherlands needs a licence for that under the Dutch Financial Supervision Act. Look the party up in the regulator's public register and compare the licence number and Chamber of Commerce number with what is on the site. If those details are missing, or do not match, do not do business.

A website gives no cover

What you read online is general information. Your cover appears solely from the policy schedule, the clauses and the policy conditions. A quotation, a price indication or an email is not a promise of cover: only after acceptance by the insurer and issue of the policy schedule are you insured. So between application and acceptance there is a period without cover.

Recognise phishing

Around renewals and after claims, fake emails and sites appear asking for a payment or for login details. We never ask for a PIN or login details by email. Check the web address letter by letter, do not click a link in an unexpected message and, if in doubt, ring the number on your policy schedule, not the number in the email.

Where to go with a complaint

If you cannot resolve matters with your insurer or adviser, you first submit a written complaint to the firm itself. If that remains unresolved, you can put the case to Klachteninstituut Financiële Dienstverlening (Kifid, the financial services complaints institute) or to the civil courts. Time limits and conditions for that route are set out in the services document and on the complaints institute's website.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Type of cover chosen: online comparison sites often show the narrowest version
  • Sum insured: the maximum payout per event or per year
  • Excess: the most used lever for bringing a premium down
  • The risk details entered: address, year of construction, use and claims history
  • Payment term: paying annually is usually cheaper than paying monthly
  • Package discount: several policies with one company

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Why does the premium on a comparison site differ from the final quotation?

An indication is based on the details you entered yourself, with standard assumptions for the rest. As soon as the insurer assesses the risk, the claims history, the exact use and the loss prevention measures come into play. That can lead to a different premium, a clause or even a refusal. So treat the indication as a starting point and not as an offer.

Can I rely on other people's experiences on the internet?

Only to a limited extent. A claim is refused or accepted on the basis of the conditions and the circumstances, and those are rarely set out in full in an online post. Two customers with the same insurer can have different clauses on their policies. Use experiences at most as an indication of accessibility and speed, and always check the cover against the conditions themselves.

What is the insurance card and where do I find it?

A standardised two-page summary with the same structure for every product, so that you can compare policies on the same points. You receive the card together with the conditions before you sign. Note: the card does not list all the exclusions. Intent, acts of war, nuclear reactions, earthquake and flooding are usually only in the full conditions.

Is taking out insurance online safe?

Provided you are with a licensed party and the connection is secure, yes. Check the web address, see whether a licence number and Chamber of Commerce number are given and keep the confirmation you receive. Keep the policy schedule, clauses and conditions together in a folder of your own, so that when you claim you are not dependent on a portal or an old email.
