In brief
Finass Advies acts as an independent adviser and intermediary and compares the offerings of several insurers. NH1816 is one of them. Through this insurer you can place, among other things, the car insurance, the buildings insurance, the home contents insurance and the liability insurance. The order in our advice is fixed: first establish what cover you need, then which insurer fills that most keenly.
The difference between insurers often lies not in the name of the cover but in the acceptance policy. The construction type and roof covering of a home, a thatched roof, a business at home, a claims history, an earlier termination or the region you live in can lead one insurer to refuse and another to accept with a clause. An intermediary knows those differences and puts an application where it stands a chance; a refusal by one party is rarely the end of the story.
With non-life insurance the principle of indemnity of Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Codeapplies: a payment may not put you in a clearly better position. When it comes to it that means: insuring for too little is penalised with a proportionate reduction when you claim, and insuring for too much produces no extra payment. We therefore check the sums insured on every application and at renewal. What the cover involves exactly you can read in the policy conditions and on the insurance card of the insurer concerned.
This page deals with one situation. The full overview is on Compare personal liability insurance (AVP).
The same independent view, whatever insurer
We work with dozens of insurers and choose whichever fits your situation best — not whichever pays us the most. That means advice built around you, not around one brand.

AdviceWhat to look out for
Four points that determine what a policy is worth, whichever insurer you end up with.
The sum insured and underinsurance
With home contents, buildings and business contents the sum insured determines the payment. If it is set too low, the insurer pays proportionately less, even on a small claim. Use an up-to-date valuation and report refurbishments, a new kitchen or a solar panel installation; otherwise the basis is no longer correct.
What you must disclose when you apply
The duty of disclosure under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code requires you to answer the questions fully and correctly. If you conceal a claims history, an earlier cancellation by an insurer or a criminal record you are asked about, the insurer can, under Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code, reduce or refuse the payment and end the policy.
Exclusions you come across everywhere
Intent and recklessness are excluded (Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code). The same applies to war risks and nuclear reactions, for damage caused by earthquake and flood and for wear, deferred maintenance and inherent defect. On a liability insurance there is the added exclusion of damage caused with a motor vehicle, for which Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM) prescribes separate compulsory insurance.
Clauses on the policy schedule
Acceptance regularly comes with a clause: a prevention requirement for locks and security, an obligation to have the electrical installation inspected or a higher excess. Such a clause takes precedence over the general conditions. If the requirement is not met, cover on that point can lapse. So read the policy schedule beyond the premium figure.
What does your premium depend on?
- Type of insurance and form of cover: the extent of the cover is the basis of the premium
- Sum insured: rebuild value, contents value or list price
- Address and construction type: the region, roof covering and use of the building
- Excess: a higher excess lowers the premium
- Preventive measures: security, inspections and clauses complied with
- Claims history: previous claims count towards acceptance and premium
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
What is covered
| Situation | AVP | Home contents insurance (inboedelverzekering) |
|---|---|---|
| Your child kicks a ball through the neighbours' conservatory window | Yes | No |
| The television falls off the wall because the bracket came loose | No | Provided that |
| Your dog bites a visitor on the hand | Yes | No |
| The washing machine leaks and the ceiling of the neighbour below is soaked | Yes | No |
| Your laptop is taken from your bag at the station | No | Provided that |
| On holiday you damage the hire car against a low wall | No | No |
The liability cover pays for someone else's loss and the contents cover for your own belongings; damage caused with a motor vehicle falls outside both.
Frequently asked questions
This is what people ask us most.
Who do I take out the insurance with, NH1816 or Finass?
The contract is concluded between you and the insurer. The policy schedule and the conditions come from that insurer. Finass acts as intermediary and remains your point of contact thereafter for changes, renewal and claims. Our role, our remuneration and the complaints procedure are described in the service guide.
Why go through an adviser rather than direct?
You can always take out cover directly. The difference lies in comparing conditions rather than premiums alone, in the question of whether the sums insured are right, and in support when you claim. With an unusual situation, such as an unusual construction type, a business at home or a claims history, that counts for more than with a standard application.
Can I switch while my current policy is running?
Usually yes. Many private insurances can be cancelled on any day after the first contract year with a short notice period. We request the necessary information from your current insurer and arrange the cancellation so that not a day is left without cover. Do not cancel anything yourself before the new policy has definitely been accepted.
What happens if the insurer refuses my application?
We then put the application to another insurer with a different acceptance policy. You do have to report an earlier refusal or cancellation on a subsequent application, because that is asked about as standard. Concealing it comes under the duty of disclosure and can cost you the payment later.
