- Dispute with your college about the internship assessment

With a.s.r., legal assistance is provided by DAS, and work, education, benefits and volunteering are split across different modules; for agency workers, interns and volunteers, the modules you choose therefore make all the difference.

Unlike NH1816, where work and income form a single module, a.s.r. divides its legal expenses insurance (rechtsbijstandverzekering) into modules, each with its own scope. The Werk (Work) module covers disputes about employment and work as a civil servant: for an agency worker, that means a dispute with the employment agency about pay, phase or termination. Disputes about a benefit or with an educational institution fall under a.s.r.'s basic module Consument & Wonen (Consumer & Home), and volunteering sits in the Persoon & Familie (Person & Family) module. If you choose only the Werk module, you miss precisely the internship and volunteering disputes.
The legal assistance is handled by DAS's lawyers; a.s.r. carries the risk. If you choose your own lawyer in proceedings where this is not mandatory, an excess of € 250 applies, along with a cap on external costs. Everyone living in your household is covered, so an intern still living at home falls under the parents' policy. a.s.r. quotes a starting premium of around € 13.73 per month; the actual premium depends on household composition and the modules chosen.
For agency workers and interns, the moment you take out the policy is decisive: a conflict that already existed or could be foreseen is excluded, and legal expenses insurers generally apply a waiting period of three months for employment disputes. We set a.s.r.'s module structure alongside those of NH1816, Klaverblad and Unigarant and look at which set-up suits the way you work.
We compare your legal expenses insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.
Legal expenses insurance
Compare
Get coveredThe three cards correspond to three ways of combining the a.s.r. modules; which one fits depends on how you work.
Only the basic module Consument & Wonen: disputes about benefits, education and purchases, but not with the agency or the hirer.
Basic module plus the Werk module: this also covers disputes with the agency about pay, phase and termination.
All modules, including Persoon & Familie for volunteering and Verkeer & Vakantie (Traffic & Holiday) for accidents on the way to work.
What is covered
| Situation | Basic | Extended |
|---|---|---|
| Dispute with a contractor about work on your home | Yes | Yes |
| Recovering damages for personal injury after a collision | Yes | Yes |
| Employment dispute or dismissal | Provided that | Yes |
| Dispute about a purchase or a delivery | Yes | Yes |
| Tax dispute or dispute about assets | No | Provided that |
| A dispute that was already running before the start date | No | No |
Legal expenses insurance has a waiting period after the policy starts and a threshold: a case is not taken on below a certain financial interest. If the case goes to court, you have a free choice of lawyer. A dispute whose cause already existed when you took out the insurance is excluded.

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
We look at the terms as well as the premium, and stay your point of contact when there is a claim.
We are not tied to one insurer and compare on the basis of an objective analysis of several companies.
You call or email someone who knows your file. No menu options, no changing call centres.
We cancel your old policy and align the start date, so you are never a day without cover.
We report the claim and monitor how it is handled. In urgent cases you can reach us on the emergency line.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
Six situations in which your choice of a.s.r. modules makes the difference.
At a.s.r., the basic module Consument & Wonen covers disputes about education and social security; the Werk module covers employees and civil servants; Persoon & Familie covers volunteering and claiming compensation for personal injury outside traffic. An intern with a dispute about an assessment is therefore covered by the basic module, an agency worker with a pay dispute needs Werk, and a volunteer who is injured needs Persoon & Familie. If you expect one of these three situations, you can choose specifically; if you do all three at once, such as a student with a side job through an agency who also volunteers, you need the complete package.
Under the collective labour agreement for agency work (uitzend-cao), agency work has phases A, B and C. In phase A, the agency can end the assignment as soon as the hirer wants; from phase B onwards, fixed-term contracts with protection against dismissal apply. Many disputes concern the count of weeks worked, the hirer's remuneration (the same pay as permanent colleagues) and unpaid hours. These are conflicts with the agency as the formal employer and fall under the Werk module at a.s.r. The DAS lawyer checks the phase count and payslips and writes to the agency, so you do not have to negotiate with the planner yourself.
If you are injured on the hirer's premises, the hirer is liable under the duty of care for hired staff (article 7:658(4) of the Dutch Civil Code, BW), even though the agency is on your payslip. Claiming personal injury compensation is not an employment dispute but a recovery claim: at a.s.r. it falls under Persoon & Familie, or under Verkeer & Vakantie if the accident happened on the way to work. Most insurers apply no waiting period to recovery claims. Medical expert reports and extrajudicial costs are paid by the insurer, not by you.
An intern has an internship agreement with the school and the host company, not an employment contract. Disputes concern an unpaid internship allowance, a negative assessment that delays the diploma, or work that is in fact ordinary production work; in the latter case, a right to the minimum wage may arise retrospectively. A dispute with the educational institution falls under Consument & Wonen (education) at a.s.r.; a pay claim against the host company requires the Werk module. If the intern still lives at home, they are covered by the parents' family policy and do not need a policy of their own.
Most municipalities have a collective volunteer insurance for accidents and liability, but it does not pay for legal help to recover your own losses from an organisation that breached its duty of care. At a.s.r., volunteering is explicitly part of the Persoon & Familie module, not Werk. This includes disputes about the volunteer agreement, an unjustified liability claim against you and claiming compensation for injury. Mind the tax limit for volunteer allowances: an allowance above it may be regarded as paid work and moves the dispute to the Werk module.
Legal expenses insurers generally apply a waiting period of three months for employment disputes; at a.s.r., a conflict that was already ongoing or foreseeable when you took out the policy is excluded. If you have already received a letter about termination, you cannot insure it after the fact. If you choose your own lawyer in proceedings where this is not mandatory, a.s.r. charges an excess of € 250 and a cap on external costs applies; let DAS handle the case and that excess does not apply. Take out cover when you start agency work or an internship, not at the first sign of friction.
Frequently asked questions about legal expenses insurance through a.s.r. for agency workers, interns and volunteers.
The Werk module, because a dispute with the agency about pay, phase or termination is an employment dispute. A dispute with the UWV (the Dutch employee insurance agency) about unemployment benefit (WW) after the assignment ends falls under the basic module Consument & Wonen, which is always part of the policy. Injury from a workplace accident at the hirer is claimed through Persoon & Familie. We usually recommend the basic module plus Werk, adding Persoon & Familie if you also do volunteer work.
a.s.r. quotes a starting premium from around € 13.73 per month including insurance premium tax for the basic module. Each extra module increases the premium; as an indication, a family with the basic module, Werk and Persoon & Familie pays between € 20 and € 35 per month. Single people pay less with many insurers. We compare the premium with NH1816, Klaverblad and Unigarant for the same combination of modules, so that you compare on cover and not just on price.
Yes, as long as you live with your parents: a.s.r. covers everyone living with the policyholder. If you live away from home, you are not automatically covered at a.s.r.; some other insurers do cover children studying away from home up to the age of 27. Check this before taking out a policy yourself. An internship dispute that is already ongoing is not covered by any new policy.
Most legal expenses insurers apply a waiting period of three months for employment disputes; a.s.r. also excludes any conflict that already existed or was foreseeable when the policy was taken out. Recovery claims after an accident generally have no waiting period. If you are starting agency work or an internship, take out cover straight away. If a conflict is looming, you can first ask a.s.r. for free advice by phone before reporting a case.
