NH1816's personal legal expenses insurance (rechtsbijstandverzekering) is part of the Flexpolis (policy wording Flex 7, December 2024). NH1816 is the insurer, but the legal assistance itself is provided by DAS Nederlandse Rechtsbijstand, for which NH1816 stands guarantor. You choose from three modules: Consument & Wonen (consumer and housing), Verkeer (traffic) and Inkomen (income). If you work as an agency worker, intern or volunteer, the Inkomen module is the core: it covers disputes arising from an employment contract with an employer or former employer, conflicts over social security benefits and provisions, and pension matters.
The limits are fixed. A dispute with a value below € 175 is not handled, except under Verkeer. External costs, such as a lawyer, bailiff, expert and court fees, are covered up to € 15,000 per event, or up to € 10,000 outside Europe and the countries around the Mediterranean. If you instruct your own lawyer in a case where legal representation is not compulsory, a maximum of € 6,000 applies, plus a personal contribution of € 250 that you pay in advance. Tax matters and benefits from the Tax Administration (toeslagen) are excluded, and the policy schedule may exclude employment law.
Unlike our page on the same target group through a.s.r., where the relationship between the agency and the hirer is central, here we look at what the NH1816 terms mean in practice for an agency worker who misses out on wages, an intern in a dispute over an assessment and a volunteer who is injured.
We compare your legal expenses insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.
Legal expenses insurance
Compare
Get coveredThe right choice depends on how you work and on what your parents, trade union or municipality have already arranged for you.
Consument & Wonen covers your disputes as a private individual and with the government over a decision about you; unpaid board work for an association is also covered here.
With Verkeer the € 175 minimum claim value no longer applies, and DAS recovers your personal injury after an accident on the way to the hirer, the internship company or your volunteer work.
Adding Inkomen means the policy covers the employment contract with the agency, an internship agreement that resembles employment and disputes with UWV or the municipality over a benefit.
What is covered
| Situation | Basic | Extended |
|---|---|---|
| Dispute with a contractor about work on your home | Yes | Yes |
| Recovering damages for personal injury after a collision | Yes | Yes |
| Employment dispute or dismissal | Provided that | Yes |
| Dispute about a purchase or a delivery | Yes | Yes |
| Tax dispute or dispute about assets | No | Provided that |
| A dispute that was already running before the start date | No | No |
Legal expenses insurance has a waiting period after the policy starts and a threshold: a case is not taken on below a certain financial interest. If the case goes to court, you have a free choice of lawyer. A dispute whose cause already existed when you took out the insurance is excluded.

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
We look at the terms as well as the premium, and stay your point of contact when there is a claim.
We are not tied to one insurer and compare on the basis of an objective analysis of several companies.
You call or email someone who knows your file. No menu options, no changing call centres.
We cancel your old policy and align the start date, so you are never a day without cover.
We report the claim and monitor how it is handled. In urgent cases you can reach us on the emergency line.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
Six situations in which the NH1816 terms determine whether DAS handles your case and up to what amount.
In phase A of the ABU or NBBU collective agreement (cao), the first 52 weeks worked, an agency contract with an agency clause (uitzendbeding) ends as soon as the hirer no longer needs you. However, if you report sick and the agency ends the assignment, or a phase B contract is terminated early, you may be entitled to wages. Such a dispute falls under the Inkomen module as a conflict arising from the employment contract with your employer, the agency. DAS checks the weeks worked and the phase on the basis of your payslips and contracts. A dispute that already existed before the policy started is not covered, so do not take out the insurance only after the agency's first letter.
Under the Waadi, agency workers are entitled to the same pay as the hirer's employees in the same position, known as the hirer's remuneration (inlenersbeloning): wages, periodic increments, allowances, expense reimbursements and ADV (reduced working hours). If your payslip shows a lower hourly rate or missing evening and weekend allowances, DAS claims the difference from the agency; if the agency goes bankrupt, the hirer may be liable. The claim value must exceed € 175, excluding interest and collection costs; a few weeks of allowances already meets that. Keep rosters, payslips and the hirer's collective agreement, because without those documents a lawyer cannot substantiate the claim.
An internship falls under the Inkomen module as soon as the relationship with the internship company resembles an employment contract: you are productively involved, receive no supervision and are paid an allowance that looks like wages. This may amount to a disguised employment contract with a right to the minimum wage. A dispute with the school over the assessment or the signing-off of the internship is education law and, with NH1816, falls under Consument & Wonen as a conflict with an institution, not under Inkomen. Students living away from home for full-time study are co-insured on their parents' family policy; for evening or part-time study they are not.
If you are injured in a warehouse or on a building site where you work as an agency worker or intern, the duty of care under Article 7:658 of the Dutch Civil Code (BW) also applies to the hirer and the internship company. DAS holds the liable party and its insurer responsible and claims loss of income, medical expenses and compensation for pain and suffering. Recovering personal injury is already part of the basic cover under most policies; on the way to work it falls under Verkeer, where the minimum claim value does not apply. Because injury cases take a long time and sometimes require a medical expert, the € 15,000 maximum for external costs is the relevant figure here, not the personal contribution.
Volunteer work is not an employment contract, so the Inkomen module does not help you here. If you fall from a ladder at the sports club, DAS recovers your damage from the organisation, which has a duty of care like an employer, and from the municipality's collective volunteer insurance if there is one. That municipal policy has fixed maximums per person and does not cover full loss of income; the difference has to be recovered through liability. Note the exclusion that disputes covered by another insurance policy or government scheme are not handled: DAS first assesses whether the volunteer insurance covers your damage in full.
If you receive a WW, Wajong or social assistance benefit and do volunteer work with an expense allowance, UWV or the municipality may treat the allowance as income or decide that you are not sufficiently available for work, resulting in a reduction or recovery. With NH1816, disputes over social security benefits and provisions are covered under Inkomen; these involve objection and appeal under administrative law. Tax matters and toeslagen, on the other hand, are excluded, even if they relate to the same allowance. Report volunteer work in advance and stay within the Tax Administration's (Belastingdienst) tax-free allowance limit; that prevents most proceedings.
Questions about legal expenses cover through NH1816 for agency work, internships and volunteer work.
DAS Nederlandse Rechtsbijstand. NH1816 is the insurer and guarantees DAS's performance, but the lawyers who handle your dispute with the agency or the internship company work for DAS. In the advice and negotiation phase you are assigned a DAS lawyer; if it comes to proceedings in which legal representation is compulsory, you have the right to choose your own lawyer, up to the maximum of € 15,000 in external costs per event.
In proceedings where a lawyer is not compulsory, for example a wage claim before the subdistrict court (kantonrechter), you may still instruct your own lawyer. With NH1816 a maximum of € 6,000 then applies to all external costs of that dispute, plus a personal contribution of € 250 that you pay in advance; only then is the case handled. If you let a DAS lawyer handle the case, you pay no personal contribution and the general maximum of € 15,000 applies.
Children living at home are co-insured on NH1816's family policy, and children living away from home only if they live elsewhere for full-time study. A dispute with the internship company over an allowance or over work that resembles an employment contract then falls under your parents' Inkomen module, provided that module is on their policy schedule and employment law has not been excluded. A dispute with the school or college over the assessment falls under Consument & Wonen.
As an indication, personal legal expenses insurance with the Consument & Wonen and Verkeer modules often costs between € 8 and € 15 per month, and with Inkomen added between € 12 and € 22 per month for a family; a single person pays less. NH1816 sells only through advisers and often within a package with other insurance policies, which affects the premium. We compare the premium and the limits with those of a.s.r. and other insurers.
