Frequently Asked Questions – Painting Insurance

Which insurance suits my painting?

For valuable art, valuables/art insurance (either separately or as an extension of contents) is the most suitable. This usually offers worldwide comprehensive coverage and higher limits than standard contents insurance.

Is my painting also insured outdoors and while traveling?

With an art/valuables policy, coverage is usually worldwide , including temporary stays elsewhere. Be aware of maximum limits per event and any country/region clauses .

What about transportation (courier, post, moving)?

Transport is often covered if properly packaged and preferably through specialized art handlers . Theft from an unattended vehicle is generally excluded.

Do I need a valuation report?

For higher values, older/vintage works, or rapid price increases, a recent appraisal report (often ≤ 2–3 years old) is required. For new or recently purchased works, a purchase receipt may suffice.

Is increase in value included?

Some policies offer indexation or coverage up to a percentage above the insured amount . We recommend periodic revaluation during rising market conditions.

What prevention requirements apply at home?

Good locks , secure mounting systems , and sometimes alarm /sensors for higher temperatures. Avoid direct sunlight, extreme temperatures/humidity , and ensure stable humidity.

Is damage due to restoration or cleaning covered?

Not standard. Preferably work with a certified restorer and confirm in advance whether restoration risk is covered by insurance.

Are his frame, glass and passepartout also insured?

Yes, usually as part of the work if specified. Please include the list price and any museum glass costs in your quote.

Can I lend or consign the work?

Yes, that's possible, but please notify the museum/gallery in advance of the loan. Additional conditions or an exhibition clause required.

Is damage caused by moisture/sunlight covered?

Damage from gradual exposure (UV, moisture, temperature) is often limited or eliminated. Prevention (UV-resistant glass, climate control) is important.

Is home contents insurance sufficient?

Usually not: the outdoor coverage limit is low and not fully comprehensive. For valuable paintings, a separate art/valuables policy more appropriate.

What information do you need for a quote?

Artist , title , technique (oil/acrylic/mixed media), size , year , value (invoice/appraisal), provenance , photos , list price , location and use (home/exhibition/transport).
