What is an Open Scooter?
A Open mobility scooter is a mobility scooter without roof or cabin. This is the most common type of mobility scooter in the Netherlands. Open mobility scooters are available with 3 or 4 wheels, in compact, robust or foldable versions. They are often provided via the Wmo (municipality) and are popular because of their maneuverability and lower price.
Open mobility scooters are lighter and cheaper then covered models (such as the Canta or Move). They are ideal for short to medium distances: shopping, visiting family or a ride through the park. Most open mobility scooters are in operation 6-15 km/h with a range of 20-50 km.
Like all mobility scooters, an open mobility scooter must also be used at least third party insurance are. At Finass Verzekert we compare insurance for all open mobility scooters: compact, robust or foldable, 3 or 4 wheels.
Types of Open Mobility Scooters
Open mobility scooters are available in different versions:
Compact
Small, light, agile. Ideal for shops and indoors. Up to 12 km/h.
Robust
Big, powerful, stable. For longer distances and uneven terrain. Up to 15 km/h.
Foldable
Easy to take with you in the car or on public transport. Light, compact. 6-8 km/h.
XXL / Heavy Duty
Extra load capacity (up to 200 kg). Reinforced construction.
3-Wheeler or 4-Wheeler?
Both types can be easily insured for the same premium:
3-Wheeler
- ✓ Very manoeuvrable
- ✓ Small turning circle
- ✓ Ideal for shops
- ✓ More legroom
- ✓ Lighter weight
- ! Less stable on uneven terrain
- ! More risk of tipping when cornering
4-Wheeler
- ✓ Very stable
- ✓ Safe in bends
- ✓ Suitable for uneven terrain
- ✓ Less risk of tipping
- ✓ Sturdier on the road
- ! Larger turning circle
- ! Slightly heavier
💡 Tip: 4-wheeling is often safer
Many manufacturers like Kymco consciously choose 4 wheels because of the extra stability. A 4-wheeler stands more firmly on the road and has less risk of tipping over bumps, bends or uneven terrain. The number of wheels makes no difference to the insurance premium.
