Frequently asked questions – Insuring a painting

Which insurance suits my painting?

For valuable art is one valuables/art insurance (separately or as an extension to furniture) is the most suitable. It usually offers global all-risk and higher limits than standard contents.

Is my painting also insured away from home and while travelling?

Usually with an art/valuables policy worldwide, including temporary stay elsewhere. NB maximums per event and any country/region clauses .

What about transport (courier, post, moving)?

Transport is often covered provided properly packaged and preferably via specialized art handlers. Theft from a unattended car is usually excluded.

Do I need a valuation report?

For higher values, old/vintage works or rapid price increases is a recent valuation report (often ≤ 2–3 years) required. New or recently purchased works: purchase invoice may suffice.

Is increase in value taken into account?

Some policies offer indexation or coverage up to a percentage above the insured amount. We recommend periodic re-appraisal in a rising market.

What prevention requirements apply at home?

Good locks, safe hanging systems and sometimes alarm system/sensors at higher values. Avoid direct sun, extreme temperature/humidity and ensure stable humidity.

Is damage caused by restoration or cleaning covered?

Not standard. Preferably work with one recognized restorer and agree in advance whether restoration risk is co-insured.

Are the frame, glass and passe-partout included in the insurance?

Yes, usually if part of the work if specified. Take the list value and any museum glasscosts in your statement.

Can I lend or consign the work?

That's possible, but report it loan to museum/gallery in advance. Sometimes it is additional conditions or a exhibition clause necessary.

Is damage caused by moisture/sunlight covered?

Damage due to gradual effect (UV, moisture, temperature) is often limited or excluded. Prevention (UV-resistant glass, climate control) is important.

Is home contents insurance sufficient?

Usually not: the outdoor limit is low and not a full all-risk. For valuable paintings is one separate art/valuables policy better fitting.

What information do you need for a quote?

Artist, title, technology (oil/acrylic/mixed media), size, year, value (invoice/valuation), prov and ance, photos, list value, location and usage (home/exhibition/transport).
