What is a CAR Insurance?

A CAR insurance (Construction All Risk) covers damage that occurs during construction, conversion or renovation projects. This is damage to the work itself, not just damage you cause to third parties.

Consider: storm damage, water damage, fire, collapse, construction errors, theft of building materials and vandalism. Your standard AVB does not cover this.

The big advantage: all construction parties are insured under one policy. Client, main contractor, subcontractors, installers, architects, constructors. No discussion about who is liable for damage.

You can choose one continuous CAR (all projects automatically covered) or a temporary CAR (per project).

The 6 Sections of a CAR Insurance

Category 1 is always insured. You can optionally insure the other categories.

1

The Work

Material damage to the structure during the construction period. Storm, fire, water damage, collapse, construction errors. Also theft of building materials on the site.

2

liability

Damage that you cause to property of third parties or persons during construction work. For example, damage to the adjacent building.

3

Existing client properties

Damage to buildings or items of the client that were already present. Essential for construction or renovation.

4

Auxiliary equipment

Damage to and theft of tools, machines, implements, chains, sheds, scaffolding, formwork and sheet piling.

5

Property Personnel

Damage to and theft of personal belongings of construction management, staff and employees on the construction site.

6

Transportation

Damage to and theft of building materials and auxiliary materials during transport within the Netherlands to the construction site.

Continuous vs Temporary & CAR vs AVB

Choose the right insurance for your situation.

Temporary (Expiring) CAR

📋 One Specific Project

Suitable for clients or incidental projects.

  • Coverage for one construction project
  • Ends upon delivery
  • Liability can be co-insured
  • Fixed premium known in advance
  • Ideal for private clients
CAR Insurance

🏗️ Damage to the Work Itself

Covers damage to the construction project and your own materials.

  • Damage to the structure
  • Theft of building materials
  • Damage to auxiliary equipment
  • Existing client properties
  • All construction parties are insured
AVB (Business Liability)

⚠️ Damage to Third Parties Only

Covers damage you cause to others, not to the work itself.

  • Personal injury to third parties
  • Property damage to third parties
  • ⚠️ NOT: damage to the work
  • ⚠️ NOT: theft of building materials
  • ⚠️ NOT: consequential damage construction error

💡 Advice: For construction projects you usually need both a CAR and an AVB. The CAR covers the work, the AVB covers damage to third parties.
