Why exclusive yacht insurance?

Protection of a valuable asset

A yacht often represents a significant amount of capital. Damage due to collision, storm, fire or theft can have major financial consequences.

Liability on the water

As an owner or skipper you are liable for damage that you or your yacht causes to others. Good liability coverage is indispensable.

International use

Do you also sail outside the Netherlands, for example at sea or in the Mediterranean? Then clear agreements about sailing area and coverage are essential.

What does exclusive yacht insurance cover?

Hull yacht insurance

Coverage for damage to your own yacht due to collision, storm, fire, lightning, theft and vandalism, among other things, according to the policy conditions.

Liability (WA)

Damage you cause with your yacht to other vessels, persons or property. Often with high insured amounts, appropriate to the value of the yacht.

Passenger accidents

A benefit in the event of permanent disability or death of passengers following an accident on board, depending on the coverage chosen.

Legal aid

Legal assistance in conflicts about, for example, damage, contracts or liability surrounding your yacht.

Equipment, tender and dinghy

Possibility to insure navigation equipment, radar, dinghy/tender and other equipment.

The exact coverage and maximums vary per insurer. Finass Verzekert helps you compare the options.

What determines the premium of an exclusive yacht insurance policy?

Value and type of yacht

Length, year of construction, material (wood, steel, polyester, aluminum), brand and finish play a role in the valuation and the risk.

Sailing area

Only inland waters or also coastal waters, sea and Mediterranean Sea? The larger and heavier the sailing area, the more risk the insurer runs.

Mooring and storage

Mooring in a well-secured marina, private mooring or dry storage in winter: this affects the risk of theft and damage.

Experience of the skipper

Sailing experience, any training received and damage history are included in the assessment.

Coverage and deductible

Full comprehensive, limited comprehensive or third party liability only, plus the amount of the deductible, partly determine the premium.

Damage history

Any previous (hunting) damage may affect acceptance and premium.

Sailing area and use of your yacht

Sailing in the Netherlands and Europe

Many yacht insurance policies offer standard coverage on inland waters and coastal waters in the Netherlands. Expansion to European waters or specific sea areas is possible, depending on the insurer.

  • Only inland waters and coastal waters.
  • More extensive European sailing area.
  • Specific periods (e.g. summer season).

Use: private, charter or mixed

Most policies are aimed at private use. If you want to rent out your yacht or use it partly for business purposes, additional agreements are required.

Always be honest about how and where you sail. This prevents problems in the event of damage.

Safety, maintenance and policy conditions

Safety features

Insurers attach great importance to good safety equipment on board. Think of life jackets, fire extinguishers, emergency signals and a well-maintained engine and electricity.

  • Regular maintenance and inspections.
  • Safety equipment according to regulations.
  • Clear procedures for crew and guests.

Conditions and obligations

The policy conditions state, among other things, which sailing areas are permitted, what maintenance obligations you have and how you must secure the yacht. It is important to know these well.

Finass Verzekert will review the conditions with you and point out important clauses and obligations.

Frequently asked questions about exclusive yacht insurance

```
What is the difference between regular boat insurance and exclusive yacht insurance?
Regular boat insurance is often intended for smaller pleasure boats and standard risks. An exclusive yacht insurance policy focuses on (motor) yachts with higher values, more extensive sailing areas and specific wishes regarding coverage, liability and additional services.
Is third party liability insurance mandatory for my yacht?
A legal obligation such as with cars does not apply in the same way to yachts. In practice, many ports and sailing areas require minimum liability coverage. In addition, third party liability coverage is strongly recommended due to the possible amounts of damage.
How is the value of my yacht determined?
The value is determined on the basis of, among other things, length, year of construction, material, brand, state of maintenance and equipment. Sometimes an appraisal is requested, especially for higher values or special yachts.
Am I also insured when I sail at sea or abroad?
That depends on the agreed sailing area in the policy. Standard cover often applies to inland waters and coastal waters. Expansion to sea and foreign waters is usually possible in consultation with the insurer.
Are loose items on board also insured?
Certain equipment and fixed parts may be insured under the yacht insurance. Separate home contents or valuables insurance may be required for loose or very valuable objects (such as art, jewelry or electronics).
What does Finass Verzekert need for a quote?
For a good quote, we ask, among other things: type of yacht, year of construction, length, material, value, mooring, sailing area, use (private/business), sailing experience and damage history. With this information we can compare suitable yacht insurance policies for you.
