Camper insurance – insured on the road and at the campsite
A camper insurance (kampeercar insurance) lijkt op een car insurance, maar is vaak uitgebreider door de hogere voertuigwaarde en de extra’s zoals built-in, accessories and (limited) inventory. Minimaal is WA obliged. You choose depending on value and risk WA Limited Casco (WA+) or All risk.
Camper insurance in brief
Daarnaast kunt u aanvullingen kiezen zoals occupants, legal aid traffic, roadside assistance or alternative transport (policy dependent).
Which coverage is often appropriate?
- WA: minimum required; especially at lower values.
- WA+ (Limited Airframe): extra cover for, among other things, theft/fire/storm/window (depending on the policy).
- All risk: most complete; often also damage caused by your own fault (depending on the policy).
Premium and acceptance depend on, among other things, vehicle, driver, zip code and claim-free years.
What is camper insurance?
Car insurance with camping component
Camper insurance is motor vehicle insurance for a camper.
How does a camper differ from a regular car?
Coverage: WA, WA Limited Casco (WA+) and Allrisk
WA (Third Party Liability)
- damage to others by your camper;
- mandatory for every vehicle on the road;
- no coverage for own damage.
WA+ / Limited Casco
- third party liability + extra coverage (policy dependent);
- often including theft, fire, storm/hail, window (depending on the policy);
- logical with a higher value or risk of theft.
All-risk / Complete Casco
- most comprehensive coverage (policy dependent);
- often also damage due to your own fault;
- interesting for newer or more expensive campers.
Camper insurance comparison checklist
| Point of comparison | Why important | What to pay attention to |
|---|---|---|
| Payment in case of total loss | High impact with major damage | Current value/new value, depreciation and conditions. |
| Accessories & installation | Value can increase significantly | Standard co-insured amount or specify separately (awning, solar panels, dish). |
| inventory | Items in a camper often have limited insurance | Maximums, exclusions, theft from vehicle (policy dependent). |
| Abroad & aid | Traveling is core use | Country list, assistance, alternative transport, repatriation (depending on the policy). |
| Theft conditions | Campers are attractive targets | Security requirements, storage, key clauses, reporting periods. |
Check policy conditions per provider; details differ despite similar product names.
Inventory, installation and accessories: prevent underinsurance
Built-in & fixed accessories
- record upgrades and conversions with value;
- save invoices and photos;
- communicate changes in a timely manner.
Inventory (loose items)
Loose items such as clothing, crockery, camping furniture, laptops or cameras are often limited verzekerd.
Common accessories for campers
- awning, solar panels, dish, air conditioning;
- bicycle carrier, tow bar, extra locks;
- mover/level systems (on some types);
- navigation, multimedia or reversing camera.
Check if there is a maximum for accessories or if you have to specify the value.
Foreign coverage, assistance and alternative transport
Green card & countries
Theft and security: important rules
Security requirements (policy dependent)
Security requirements may apply to theft coverage. Additional security may be required for higher values or risk areas.

Frequently asked questions about camper insurance
Is camper insurance mandatory?
Yes. If your camper is registered and not suspended, at least third party liability insurance is required.
What is the difference between WA, WA+ and Allrisk?
WA covers damage you cause to others. WA+ (limited hull) often also covers theft, fire, storm/hail and sometimes window (depending on the policy). Allrisk (complete hull) also often covers damage to your own camper due to your own fault (depending on the policy).
Is inventory in the camper insured?
Inventory is often limited or not included as standard. Check maximums, conditions and whether theft from the camper is covered (policy dependent). Additional coverage may be required for valuables.
Are accessories such as solar panels and awning included in the insurance?
This varies per insurer. Sometimes there is a standard co-insured amount, sometimes you have to specify accessories separately. Save invoices and take photos.
What about coverage abroad?
Many policies offer coverage in Europe or within a list of countries. Check green card, list of countries, assistance and possible maximum duration of stay (depending on the policy).
What security is needed for theft coverage?
Policy conditions differ. At higher values, additional security requirements may apply (e.g. alarm or track & trace). Also check key clauses and reporting periods.
Can I insure breakdown assistance and replacement transport?
Often yes, as additional coverage. Check when this applies (in the Netherlands/abroad), the duration and any exclusions (depending on the policy).
Which factors determine the premium the most?
Including: vehicle value and coverage, zip code/risk area, claim-free years, age/driving experience, storage and security, and travel profile (situation-dependent).
